How to create discount codes for Shopify
How you can create discounts in Shopify, that is, create discount codes, we explain and show you in this Shopify tutorial. Whether it’s specifically for products or categories, free shipping, or “buy X, get Y” discounts, we’ll go over every variation.
Shopify Create Discounts - How It Works
One of the most effective ways to boost sales is to create and give discounts. How this can be implemented for Shopify, i.e. how you can create discount codes and especially what exactly you can discount, we will take a closer look in this Shopify tutorial. The 4 variants
But now let’s go to the backend. Here we are now and look for the menu for “Discounts” in the left sidebar.
If you haven’t created one yet, it should look the same for you. Accordingly, we click on “Create discount” and now see four different variants. Either a discount is given on a specific product or category, or on a specific order, or variant 3, if you buy one product or a certain quantity, you will receive a discount on another product, or variant 4 a free shipping. But let’s go through this in order and create a product discount first.
Shopify Create Discounts - Product Discount
Field 1 distinguishes whether the discount code must be entered manually by the customer or whether it is registered automatically and then already displayed automatically in the shopping cart and checkout. You can either let Shopify generate it for you or give it a name of your own.
Under it, the amount or percentage can be determined. You can also differentiate whether the discount covers only the one-time purchase or only the subscription or both. Now you can further differentiate whether the discount should only apply to certain products or certain categories.
Accordingly, the respective must then also be selected. Now the discount can still be linked to certain minimum requirements. So that our 10% discount is only redeemable when a shopping cart value of 100€ is reached. But this can also be applied to the number of pieces.
More setting options
Another limiting option, besides the price and quantity, is belonging to a customer group. This can be e.g. exclusively e-mail subscribers e.g. be After that, it can be regulated how often this discount can be used. Either you select the first one and specify a number or you select the second one and specify that this is valid only once. Finally, you will need to decide if discount combinations are possible. If you have already created discounts, they can be selected here as a combination variant. Last but not least, it is possible to specify a time period. However, if you prefer an open end, just specify when you want the discount promotion to start. At the end, check all the information again on the right so that you don’t give out anything wrong.
The order discounts
Subsequently, all created discounts can then be viewed here. The second variant is hardly different from the first, so we won’t cover it separately in this video. Therefore, we go directly to the third. The first field remains as before. Then in the second there is an If Then relationship. So the discount is linked to a condition of purchase. Either a minimum quantity or a minimum purchase amount. This, in turn, is also applicable to a category or a specific product.
Create Shopify Discounts - Buy X, Get Y
The field below can then display what will be a discount promotion. This means that you can e.g. say, if the customer buys product X once, he gets another one of them for free. Or customer buys product X and gets 50% discount on product Y. You can also determine how often this discount may be used. All other fields are already known from our first discount. Therefore, we enter directly into the “Free Shipping” discount setting mask. What is different here is only the selection of countries for which this discount is valid and the exclusion of orders that exceed a certain amount of the shipping rate. Otherwise, we have the same settings masks again.
