“Open your store to customers from all over the world”. This is the slogan Shopify uses to promote the Shopify Markets feature. But what exactly is Shopify Markets?

With Shopify Markets, the e-commerce platform has introduced a solution for German merchants to conduct cross-border online trade. This is Shopify’s response to the increasing demand from international shoppers, as one-third of the traffic on German Shopify online stores comes from abroad. And even though there are now many ways to sell cross-border, country-specific characteristics such as currencies, languages or payment methods can still prevent merchants from selling abroad.

One Shopify store for many markets

For the problem mentioned above, Shopify Markets is supposed to be the solution. Shopify itself states that they believe the future of commerce is to be everywhere. So with Markets, they want to create the ability to identify, build, and manage international markets from a single Shopify store. Shopify bases its analysis of the markets on data from more than 1.7 million merchants worldwide. Through these, insights can be gained, allowing recommendations to be made on how, where or when to sell products most effectively in a new region.

So with Shopify Markets, German online retailers can enter new markets with just a few clicks and manage them from a central dashboard. The following features are available:

  1. Local currencies and payment methods, with up to 133 currencies available.
  2. The pricing and price rounding
  3. The product availability per store
  4. Currency/Language are automatically displayed based on the buyers country. It can be sold in up to 20 languages.
  5. Local domains with automatic SEO optimization
  6. Accounting for customs duties and import taxes for buyers to avoid unforeseen costs in product delivery

For stores using the Advanced Shopify or Shopify Plus plan, these additional features are available:

  1. The calculation and collection of customs duties and import taxes at checkout
  2. Set up international pricing for different markets with Shopify Payments

Advantage in terms of conversion

According to Shopify, conversion rates are 1.4 times higher when stores show shoppers products in their language and currency. So these features could be very helpful for online retailers. Shopify also has more features planned for Markets coming soon. This includes features such as customization of product catalogs by market.
