Shopify Semantic Search

New AI search for Shopify Plus merchants

Shopify ‘s new semantic search now works even smarter and goes beyond the previous keyword-based search thanks to innovative AI technology. You can find out exactly what the difference is, what semantics are and how to activate the search for your Shopify store here.

Shopify Semantic Search - What is it?

The semantic search is again a Shopify Plus exclusive and is activated via the Search & Discovery app.
But what exactly does semantic mean? According to the general definition, semantics is a branch of linguistics and examines the meaning of words, phrases and sentences in a language. In terms of Shopify, this means that the search not only explicitly returns what is entered, but goes beyond that. It is therefore an AI-powered extension of the simple keyword-oriented storefront search function. It replicates the customer’s purchase intention more effectively and returns more relevant search results. But how exactly does it all work?

Semantic vs. keyword-based search

Ex. the new search differs from the previous keyword-based search in that not only text data of your products is taken into account, but also image data.
As an example, Shopify mentions here the association between the search term “party shoes Christmas” and the colors green and red, because of Christmas and the shoe category pumps due to the keyword “party shoes”. The AI-based search therefore thinks further than just keywords.

Shopify Semantic Search - The requirements

To be able to use the new semantic Shopify search, you must be a Shopify Plus merchant, have less than 200,000 products in your range and have an English storefront. It is also possible that the semantic search cannot be activated if you are not using Shopify’s native search results because, for example, you are not using the Shopify search results. you have installed other third-party search apps. If all requirements are met, the search can be activated in the Search & Discovery app settings under “Search relevance”. Click here on Activate to activate the semantic Shopify search.

Manual optimization of the semantic Shopify search

You can also optimize the search. Ex. whether the search should only include products, only pages, only blog articles or all three. Have you activated the predictive search, which means that when you type in the search term, the customer is presented with suggestions visually below the search bar. Here, too, you can decide which results should be displayed to the customer. If you want to emphasize certain products, there are so-called product boosts. You can find these in the Search & Discovery app under the Search menu item. If you click on Create product boost, you can select the desired product and manually assign search terms to it. This means that when these search terms are entered, this product is preferred and displayed higher up in the search.

How to create synonym groups

Another approach that works somewhat more globally is the creation of synonym groups. For example, customers enter often enter a different term in the search than you have named your product, then both terms can be easily matched in a synonym group. This means that if the customer enters one, a connection to the other is recognized and the product named after the synonym appears in the search. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to buy product after product. individually, but these changes apply to all products named after the synonym. That’s what I mean by global rather than specific optimization.
