Shopify product attributes

Now simply create variants via a single listing

Thanks to the updated taxonomy, each standard product category is assigned a variety of associated Shopify product attributes. This now makes it easier to create, classify and organize products and automatically create variants.

Shopify product attributes - Automatically create attributes

In today’s example, we choose a wool sweater as the product, for which Shopify now automatically creates product attributes. But how exactly does it work?
If you create a new product and only enter the product name, in this case wool sweaters, Shopify automatically assigns the product to the “Shirt & Tops” category. In connection with this, you will automatically be given the correct category meta fields that are typical for this category. So color, material, size, age group, neckline and sleeve length.

Adjust Shopify product attributes manually

When you then select your product images, the recognized attributes are automatically added to the category meta fields. In this case, the color. If you want to customize them, that’s no problem. You can adjust the name of the color, the hexacode, i.e. the exact shade and, if necessary, the pattern.
If you are happy with it, you can create your variants underneath based on the color. The adjusted color values are also adopted here.

How to easily create variants

If you also want to create size variants, you simply have to specify which sizes are available and they will be created. The individual variants, e.g. Frost Blue Small, Frost Blue Medium, Marigold Small, Marigold Medium and so on are now clearly displayed as a stack and help you not to lose track, but also to carry out global bulk processing. In this example, you can see that only the matching product image is added to the stack, which is then used, for example, to create a new product. is adopted for all sizes. So you don’t have to assign a picture to each size again and again.

Shopify product attributes - The variant limit has been increased

If the variant criteria are not just 2 colors and 4 sizes, but perhaps 15 colors, 8 sizes and 5 different cut-out types, the previous limit of 100 is quickly exceeded. With the new Shopify update, however, the limit has been raised to 2000, which should no longer cause any problems.

Display all variants on a detail page

If you are a Shopify Plus merchant, you also have the option of creating a separate media gallery for each individual color. This means that you can store several images for each color, which are then displayed on a single product detail page, as shown here. The practical thing is that you can manage all variants with one listing, but each color variant still has its own URL. So if you only want to create a marketing campaign for a specific variant, this is no longer a problem.

The Combined Listings App

This is made possible by the new Combined Listings Shopify Plus app.
This means that with this app each variant has its own image carousel, its own descriptive URL and can be switched live or hidden independently of the rest.
