Shopify vs. Oxid eShop

Canadian SaaS Shop System vs. German Open Source/Cloud Shop System

In this video, it’s Shopify vs. Oxid eShop.

Whether the Canadian SaaS store system appeals to you more than the open source store system from Freiburg, you can find out with the help of our store system comparison video.

Shopify vs. Oxid eShop - Who makes the race?

In this blog, we contrast the already well-known cloud store system Shopify with a store system that we cover rather less often. This refers to Oxid eShop, the store system Made in Germany developed by Freiburg-based Oxid eSales GmbH. Since we already went into more detail about Shopify in the videos before, now some info about Oxid. In the early days of Oxid eShop, it was designed as a proprietary system, but this was adapted by a complete revision of the source code. This meant that this could also be used as an open source solution. As a result, there was a free Community Edition. This means that you can simply use Oxid eShop for free and try it out. We have already demonstrated how to install this store system in a video. In addition to the Community Edition, Oxid offers you four other variants to choose from. Self-hosted, there are also Professional and Enterprise Editions. What is available in each case can be viewed in separate detailed landing pages on the Oxid website. But Oxid is now also available in the cloud. A distinction is made between a B2B and B2C cloud.

What is Oxid eShop and what can it do?

Which version is best for you depends on your needs. Our tip at this point would be to try out the free version and see which modules and functions you are still missing and see if these can be added via module purchase or if it makes sense to purchase the Professional Edition. This can be purchased for a one-time 2,900€. With the Enterprise Edition, however, you have to pay a lot more, but in return you get individual customer support, as well as a wide range of modules and interfaces.15 – 32,000€, depending on whether it is a B2B or B2C solution. It also allows you to create multiple subshops. So in the end, it’s a matter of how big you currently are and where you want to go. A big plus is also the well-done documentary in German. What the Shopify App Store is for Shopify, the Oxid exchange marketplace is for Oxid. Here, then, there are both free and paid extensions. That means you can first see how you can “spice up” your free standard store with the help of the free extensions. However, if you lack the know-how on how to integrate these extensions, we at eBakery as an Oxid eSales agency will be happy to help.

Shopify vs. Oxid eShop - Summary

So what can ultimately be said when the two systems are contrasted?
Oxid eShop is less intended for very small to small projects, but is scalable for very large projects with the help of the Enterprise Edition. Accordingly, a certain skill level is required to set up the Professional or Enterprise Shop, which must be available or acquired through your agency. However, there are now over 100 Oxid Solution Partners who are actively supporting you. Shopify, on the other hand, is rather less or not at all suitable for the very, very large projects. However, the setup can be done on its own for a simple store. Therefore, no programming knowledge is required. At Shopify you can fully test the store for 14 days free of charge. With oxide, it’s the other way around. You can use the standard version for free for an unlimited time, but you cannot test the Enterprise Edition.

If you have any questions about Oxid eSales or Shopify we will be happy to help you

So in the end, it depends on how big your company is and where you want to go. As a starter with little budget Shopify will be more suitable, but with more budget and big plans then Oxid offers you a modern solution both in the cloud and self-hosted as an open source system. If you are not sure yet, we will be happy to advise you as a Shopify agency as well as an Oxid eSales agency. Please feel free to make an appointment.
