Shopify, Shopware Cloud and Gambio Cloud under the microscope

In this video, we take a closer look at the 3 cloud store systems Shopify, Shopware Cloud and Gambio Cloud, explain the advantages of a SaaS system and look at how these three online store systems differ from each other.

Review to previous episodes

In our video “How tobecome anonline retailer” as well as in the episode “What is e-commerce“, we have made it clear that it takes a lot to set up a successful online store. That’s why any relief comes in handy.

Cloud store systems in comparison - relief for online retailers

A system that takes a lot of work off the hands of the prospective online merchant and is therefore so popular is the Shopify store system, which is also very often represented on our channel. One of the things that makes it easier is not having to worry about hosting. This is because it is a Software as a Service system, that is, the store system in the cloud. Broken down, this means that the software and the IT infrastructure are operated by an external IT service provider and used by the customer as a service. Now Shopify is not the only cloud store system, but ranks alongside Shopware and Gambio. In this article, you can find out which cloud systems offer which advantages and which points still need to be addressed or care should be taken.

These are the advantages

I think the general advantages of cloud hosting over classic hosting are obvious – it saves you work, money and time and is usually even often faster. And closely linked to time is also the know-how. Sure, you can watch an eBakery YouTube video on how to make, for example. installed a JTL store 5, but if you have never seen an FTP client before, you will need some time to get used to it. That all falls away now with cloud systems. But who does this play into the cards now?

Cloud store systems in comparison - What you have to pay attention to from a legal point of view

Small and medium-sized companies in particular have their first hurdle removed here. In a few minutes, you can build your own online store using the modular principle. This all sounds very good and mostly beneficial, but there are also negative aspects.
I wouldn’t call it negative, just there is one thing to keep in mind with SaaS system. Data protection. Why?
It matters where the servers are located on which your data is processed. Just as bspw. Shopify is a Canadian store system, the DSGVO alarm bells might go off. The fact is, the Shopify store is not legally compliant by default. First of all, some configurations have to be made to the system as well as corrections to the content. By the way, we are currently working on how to get your Shopify store legally compliant in the playlist together with the Händlerbund. So it’s worth subscribing.

But we can reassure you, the location will not be a problem. This is because Shopify also uses EU servers for merchants from the EU. But what you have to watch out for are the app extensions. For example an order management app to access personal customer data. While Shopify requires their so-called sub-processors to comply with strict data protection obligations, it does not prevent data storage with app vendors. That means it’s up to you to pay attention to how app extensions handle your data. In clear contrast, the two German store systems Shopware and Gambio use only European, if not purely German servers and also require that apps go through a review process before they are made available in the app store.
But who has the edge now?

The conclusion

All store cloud systems bring with them what you need as an online retailer with small and medium-sized businesses. It must be said quite clearly that Shopify has a years-long head start in development. Both Shopware and Gambio have only been available in the cloud since last year. Shopify for much longer. Nevertheless, German store systems are ahead of the game when it comes to data protection. So, in the end, it will then be an individual decision that is not necessarily due to cloud hosting per se. However, one can definitely state that it is a significant relief for eCommerce beginners compared to classic self-hosted store systems.

Cloud store systems in comparison - The prices

Finally, let’s take a look at the rates of the individual cloud store system providers. Shopify first. If you don’t want to go with Shopify Plus, there are these three plans. The price range here is between 24€ and 247€. For Shopware this is between 0€ and 199€. In return, the revenue share is higher with the free plan, you can create only one user, have no support, etc.
For Gambio the price range is 20 – 100€. What can be said in general is that all prices include hosting and you can test all three systems for free. Therefore, try it out, invest a little time and find out which store system suits you or make a consultation appointment with eBakery.
