In this Shopify tutorial, we’ll explain what Shopify is all about. We take a closer look at the cloud store system and show you how it differs from marketplaces like eBay or Amazon. All this in this video.
First of all, Shopify is clearly defined as a store system. That means it’s in a completely different category than the two giants you probably already know – Amazon and eBay. These are namely online marketplaces. You can sell on both of them, but there you have to give a part of your profit to the operator of this marketplace. This means that Amazon and eBay earn money with every purchase. The infrastructure of the marketplace website is already complete, the only thing you need to do is to create your products, upload product images and create your listing. So create item names and descriptions, as well as item features and bullet points. Already you can sell.
With a store system like Shopify, you create everything on your own, not only the items, but also the structure. So for example. the categories, you need to set up shipping and payment providers, can use different themes to determine the complete appearance of your own store. Another difference is the domain. The store has its own domain, the marketplace the main domain of the operator. This is a blessing and a curse at the same time, because, for example. Everyone knows Amazon. I think the first impulse when you think to yourself “Gee summer is dawning, I need sunglasses” will be to type Amazon into your browser’s URL bar. This makes it easier for marketplace traders to sell quickly and a lot without much hassle – in theory. With your own online store, you first have work to do, including marketing.
Now you understand what a store system is and that Shopify is one. But what’s so special about Shopify? With other store systems like JTL-Shop, Shopware, Magneto you have to host it on a server first. Ergo more work and effort. Shopify is a cloud store system or also called SaaS – Software as a Service. This means you don’t have to do anything other than enter www.shopify.de, log in in 5 minutes and you can start right away, no installation or anything. However, it must also be said that some store software operators also offer cloud hosting, such as e.g. Shopware. Only it can be said that Shopify has been offering this form for the longest time. Another advantage is simplicity. You don’t need any programming skills to set up a fully-fledged and really modern looking online store. Nevertheless, you will be given the opportunity to view and edit the code. This can be e.g. This makes sense if you want to connect the store to Google’s Search Console and have to include an HTML tag for this purpose.
You have a simple but effective page builder that lets you drag and drop elements into the main field and then easily adjust the color, font, etc. in the edit bar. To do this, you can connect the store with the popular marketplaces and social media platforms. That means what I explained at the beginning does not have to be an either or thing. You can also drive a multichannel strategy, with which you then use Shopify as a central management unit and then transfer the products to the Instagram store to make them available for sale there.
If the selected theme, which is the basis of your complete appearance, does not provide some options out of the box, you can use them, e.g., in a new theme. be supplied by apps. This is not a problem at all in Shopify. But with Shopify, not only is multichannel, i.e. selling on multiple platforms in parallel, possible, but also omnichannel. The Shopify POS also allows you to manage your brick-and-mortar retail directly in Shopify. Now maybe you know what Shopify is and why you always hear about this store system.
