Many of us have experienced a sudden drop in reach on Instagram. Some blame the algorithm for this, others suspect the shadowban. Engagement or reach is one of the most Googled search terms on Google and the topic is one of the most asked questions on Instagram itself. The Head of Instagram has now officially shared in a Q&A what can be done to get out of this engagement hole.
In the process, Instagram’s CEO gave important tips. His response was to try new things and experiment with new content. Here he refers to the new algorithm, which especially tries to satisfy the interests of users. With new ideas and content in a different form, you could again attract more interest from your followers. The important thing is to stay in your niche. If your account is about fitness, don’t start posting coffee content as an experiment. Rather try to change the format you have. For example, use slideshows, create more Stories, or post more regularly. The CEO emphasizes elsewhere that it has been proven by Instagram how important the first 2 seconds are in which a user looks at a post. In these seconds, the interest of the viewers must be grabbed.
As an example, he uses a post he made recently. He posted an IG-TV video about the algorithm and ranking that had more engagement than any post before it in recent years. He had not yet had this type of content in this format on his account. The success of his IG-TV video will have been due in particular to the interest of the users. Especially the topic of ranking in relation to the algorithm is a topic that is interesting for every Instagram user. Since it’s a longer video, it very likely had a high watchtime as well. This means again for the algorithm that it was very interesting for the users.
What we can learn from him is that sometimes we just need to post things in a different format if we want more engagement again. Think about who your target audience is. Many followers of Instagrams CEO follow him because he is the Head of Instagram. He also posts family and private content on his account. The fact that his IG-TV video was particularly successful was due to the fact that it was created on the topic on which his followers wanted information. So look at what kind of content your followers actually want to see from you. Be creative in how you play out this content. Be it the way you edit videos or images or the format in which you put the content on the platform. To do this, try different things. But most especially, you should use the new features of Instagram itself. Especially new features are rewarded by Instagram with a lot of reach. For example, instead of posting pictures, you should post reels.
The Q and A also asked a similar question regarding stories. The question was, what can be done when storyviews keep going down, or stop going up? His answer was: “Take a break for a few days and then start again. Again, change the format and try to figure out what stories your followers want to see. Be creative.” Basically, he gives a very similar answer here. However, the pause is interesting. The break is helpful to rekindle the interest of followers, since you have not been active for some time. This increased interest is also perceived by the algorithm, which then gives you more engagement again. So if you have few views, a break can be helpful. The key word from the Head of Instagram is clearly creativity when it comes to having more success on the platform again. That’s why it’s important to have an Instagram strategy so you don’t randomly post past the topic.
