As an online store owner, you may have come across the term Shopify Payments while searching for a payment provider and may have wondered what this term means and what payment methods are possible through this platform. Shopify Payments is here to stay and is being rolled out in multiple countries.

But then what is Shopify Payments?

Shopify Payments is the official payment gateway of Shopify. Shopify has developed its own payment method to make it easier and also provide more security, as it can be used by many of its customers and online store merchants, both to make purchases and to receive their payments. It fully integrates with your Shopify store and its features allow you to manage all payment matters from your dashboard. In the past, German and Austrian store owners had a little extra work because they had to enter their own login data into Shopify, set up a merchant account or at least a third-party payment solution like PayPal. It’s different now, but it’s important to note that many of the Shopify Payments payment providers can vary by country and region.

Payment methods

The payment methods are Klarna, Google Pay and Apple Pay, Maestro, payment store, MasterCard, credit cards such as VISA, Sofortüberweisung or American Express, Maestro debit card. It works just like Paypal, Amazon Pay and other payment services offered as payment methods for your Shopify store, but when a customer pays through Shopify Payments, you can see all the payment information in the Shopify admin area. Other than when a customer chooses one of the above methods, if you need information on incoming payments, you should look for the payment provider used. Since Shopify Payments is integrated with your own store, once activated, you can use it without having to install and configure it, of course, only if Shopify Payments is available at your location. Shopify Payments is used as a payment method when your customers shop using that particular method or one of the “expedited checkout” payment providers like Apple Pay, Meta Pay, and others.

Shopify Payments Fees

Traditionally, Shopify users have to pay transaction fees in addition to the payment provider’s fees when making payments through external payment gateways. However, when using Shopify Payments, these transaction fees are waived. Shopify Payments, an in-house alternative, allows customers of an online store to pay reliably and securely.

Shopify Payments Setup

Setting up Shopify Payments is very simple. It also prevents you from setting up a merchant account with these external payment providers. And one of the most frequently mentioned advantages is the absence of transaction fees, as we have already mentioned. Another interesting fact is that the higher the plan, the less transaction fees you pay. The cost of the gateway depends on the contracted plan, of course, as both the hosting and the gateway come from Shopify itself.
