Create Shopify template

How to create your own Shopify theme

Create your own template in Shopify – How this works, which themes can be the basis of the whole thing, which elements for text, images and videos are available to you and how your Shopify template can then look in the end, you will see in this screencast episode.

Create Shopify template: The foundation

Since we looked at how you can customize your JTL Shop 5 and create your own template in a previous episode, today we’re going to take a look at Shopify from that standpoint. You can find your template in your online store under Themes. You have the option to upload a theme that you have purchased externally here or to choose one of the free themes as a basis. We chose the“Debut” theme as our starting theme and customized it to our liking, creating our own Shopify theme from it.

The editor to customize your Shopify template

The editor at Shopify, which is called OnPage Composer at JTL, has similar features. The settings we showed at the beginning in the backend are here in the left column at the very bottom under Theme Settings. You can select your used colors and enter them by hexacode to choose exactly your CI color. The font can also be set individually and then applies to the entire theme, regardless of which subpage is currently being accessed. The favicon can be integrated, your social media can be entered, which then appear in the footer and are clickable and much more. Otherwise, you also have elements that are called portlets at JTL, which are only split differently in Shopify. You don’t have the division into content and layout sections, but into blog elements, photo and video elements, text elements, etc.
But you can implement similar.

Create Shopify template: The elements

So we were able to integrate the slideshow here as well and enter the desired text at the bottom left. You could also integrate product videos by adding a rich text element over it and then placing the video underneath. Unlike JTL, this is not done by drag and drop, but by adding a new section at the end of your already integrated sections and then selecting a new element. This is then always placed at the end of the page, but can then be dragged to any position. Thus, we were able to insert a photo with text or even a series of 3 different images that could illustrate your product categories, which would then be explained in more detail in the text below. Under there you have several tiles with products. Here, the focus is more on the pictures and the price than detailed explanations. Of course, within this section you have the possibility to decide for yourself how many rows and tiles you want to have integrated in order to adapt them exactly to your assortment. If you want to demonstrate several categories on one store page, it is a good idea to separate them with a prestigious introductory image. This should then appear in full size and make you want more.

Shopify offers many combinations to display images

So you see, there are several image combinations in Shopify. And just like in our JTL Shop 5 template, we close the page with our testiomonials. You can insert quotes and place the testimonial images under there in a gallery. That would be an idea approach how to create your own template in Shopify.
