Shopify Filter

Find the right product quickly and easily

Shopify filters allow your customers and store visitors to find the product they are looking for directly. However, if they have no idea what they are looking for, Shopify filters can help them get an overview of your range. You can find out which app you can use to optimize your filter options in this tutorial.

Why do you need Shopify filters?

Online store operators with a large product range in particular have the challenge of presenting it clearly and, above all, making it easy to find. But often you don’t need a bulging warehouse, even service providers who offer many different variants, such as the “T-shirt”. Cell phone repair shops are struggling with this challenge. That’s why in this video we show you how you can use the free app developed by Shopify itself to make your products quick and easy to find using filters.

What are filters?

But what are filters and how do they benefit you as an online retailer?
Let’s do a practical test in a well-known Shopify store called Pari. If we enter “T-shirts” in the search bar, we are also shown T-shirts. If we enter “pants”, we are shown pants. So far so simple. But you may also want to expand your products beyond the title and description. In other words, give your customers the opportunity to find the desired product using search terms that are not contained in the title and description. This is exactly what Shopify filters and tags are for. You get the actual filter function here – by defining yourself which filter categories the customer can see. So if it’s a completely new visitor to your store who doesn’t yet know what they’re looking for, they can easily get an overview using the filters. But how can you use them for your store?

Set up Shopify filters using the Search & Discovery app

This is made possible by the Search & Discovery app, which you can easily download from the Shopify App Store.
As you can see, you can not only actively make the search easier for your customers, but also receive feedback in the form of analysis data as to whether your settings are set correctly.
The app itself is then divided into 4 categories. An overview or an internal app dashboard in which the analysis data just mentioned is displayed, a customization area for filters, one for the search and a recommendations area, which means recommendations. This means you can implement your cross-selling strategy.

Shopify Search & Discovery App put under the microscope

But let’s take a closer look at the filters. As the store operator, you decide which filters you want to integrate. Incidentally, the popular Tag Filter with the Search & Discovery app can now be used again, which was temporarily not the case. Furthermore, you can now also create filter groups. For example, if the customer has If too many values are available for the “Colour” filter, these values can be organized into groups to provide a better overview. How the whole thing looks in your frontend depends on your theme. For example, it can be look like this, i.e. on the left in the sidebar or something, more like a burger menu. At least the method of application is always the same. Filters stand for specific features that customers can then search for without entering a specific search term. Speaking of search, this can also be optimized with the Shopify app. As mentioned at the beginning, synonyms can be added for this. In the example shown, for example Yoga pants can be used as synonyms for thights. In German-speaking countries, that would be leggings and tights. The point is to add alternative search terms without making them publicly visible. Similar to backend keywords on Amazon.

Determine recommended products yourself

The last area is the recommendation area. The basic requirement for this is a Recommendation Block within your theme. You can check whether this is available by going into your Theme Editor. If this doesn’t mean anything to you yet, then we recommend you watch our “Create a Shopify store in under 12 minutes” video first. The problem with recommendation blocks, however, is that they act dynamically. This means that an algorithm evaluates purchasing behavior and similar factors in order to display a suitable selection to the customer. This can sometimes be good, but sometimes less suitable. To minimize the probability, you can now choose which products should be suggested.

Shopify agency

As a result, you can upgrade your global search, your filter option and your cross-selling blocks free of charge. Simply install the app, open it in the backend and make the desired changes as described above. If you have any questions, please leave them in the comments.
