Shopify Metaobjects - Review

Another follow-up on the features of Shopify’s big 2023 update. In the first episode, we took a rough look at conversion tools. In the last episode, we took a closer look at the Checkout Editor. This one discusses another great tool, about which there were most follow-up questions, as it didn’t seem entirely clear. We are talking about the MetaObjects. What exactly these do or represent, we explain to you now.

Shopify Metaobjects - Definition

Now let’s try to find a definition for the MetaObjects. Attentive viewers will remember our “Metafields” episode. Metafields are individual pieces of information that we can add to a specific product. This means that these are then only played out for this one product. An example of clothing would be as a metafield for example. the material used. This in turn means we can add more information to an object, in this case a product. Other types of objects can be e.g. Be blog articles, collections, pages, etc. But what we have not been able to do so far is to create new object types. This is exactly where the MetaObjects come in. As an example, let’s take the Shopify example from the blog article, in which the new object “Influencer” was created for a store. This cannot be reflected as a product, a blog, or a collection. But how does that work?

How to create Shopify metaobjects?

We can create a new MetaObject first in the settings. There you go to “Custom Data” and at the very bottom you will find the new “MetaObjects” menu where you can define a new one. Give the metaobject a name, in this case “Influencer”. Then you can define “metafields” for this new object type. That is, you need to look at what the desired layout is composed of. In our case, it would be two “Single Line Text” blocks for the name and the Instagram account. Then a file module, in which then the image for the profile can be deposited. And we could then extend that for the other data. But I think you get an idea how the MetaObjects are intended.

Shopify update creates completely new possibilities

If you have finally created this, you can now add individual entries for this object.
This means that the individual information of the influencers can now be entered according to the MetaField specifications. So name, Instagram name and a picture. So Bob is now not a blog post, not a product, but an influencer. This Influencer Object can then, for example. be integrated on your start page. This creates completely new possibilities.

Another example of a different industry would be, for example. Recipes, which now do not have to be created as individual blog posts, but as a separate, newly created category, so to speak.
