Shopware vs. Shopify

Which store system suits you best?

In this video we compare Shopware vs Shopify. The cloud-based Canadian vs. the German open source system. We examine Shopify and Shopware in terms of their USPs, price, B2B suitability and even more aspects. All this in this video.

Shopware vs. Shopify - comparison of two store systems

In this episode, we take another look at two very well-known and also popular store systems and see where the advantages, but also the weaknesses of both lie. On the one hand, the classic system as a service store system Shopify and on the other hand the store system German Fabrikas Shopware.

What is Shopify?

Shopify is the cloud-based online store builder par excellence for small and medium-sized businesses. A store system offered by a Canadian company, but programmed by a German developer, that has been around since 2006. What makes Shopify so attractive is the entry price of only about 25€ per month and the fact that you don’t need any programming skills, but can still run a functioning, professional store.

What are the benefits of Shopify?

Shopify scores with a very simple modular principle, which is also open to people who know nothing about software and programming and have no technical knowledge. Shopify Appstore offers more tools, extensions and design templates that let you customize interface and usability according to your needs. Much of the content is free, and large companies can upgrade to Shopify Plus or Advanced Shopify. Of course, all common payment providers are supported and various marketing and analysis tools can be seamlessly connected. The good extensibility through apps is complemented by the high security and fast maintenance and everything can be attractively set according to your corporate design and smoothly integrated into existing websites.

What is Shopware?

Shopware, on the other hand, has taken things up a notch with its 6th version. The worlds of experience function as an innovative CMS, with the help of the Rule Builder you create individual workflows and thus automate your store. Another point is the fact that Shopware is open source software. This allows you to extend your store as you wish and customize the code. Furthermore, Shopware does not have a commission model either. This means that the bigger you get, the more Shopify earns from it. Shopware can be used in the Community Edition free of charge or as a Professional Edition either in a subscription model for monthly 199€ quasi leased or purchased for a one-time 2495€. The good thing is that Shopware is now also available in the cloud, feel free to check out our cloud store systems comparison video.

What are the benefits of Shopware?

Shopware enjoys the trust of customers such as Haribo or Borussia Dortmund and already over 100,000 online stores function with this software at their heart. You can choose from over 1500 templates and themes that can be customized in a flash. As a company based in Germany, Shopware knows the German market inside out. One is best equipped for the customer’s needs and has access to dozens of easy-to-understand instructions and informative tutorials. All setup fees are eliminated and all software has a simple back-end. Even difficult issues are constantly simplified in Shopware products and the start in business is made as easy as possible. To cope with possible marketing and visibility problems, Shopware offers ideal opportunities for SEO optimization and ranking improvement.

The Enterprise Editions of Shopware vs. Shopify

The good thing about the Professional Edition are, among other things, the extensions directly available to you, for which you would otherwise have to pay money again individually, the possible multilingualism and the extended functions in the CMS. With Shopify, above all, you have more user accounts available, you have to pay less commission and payment fees the more you pay for the plan, and you have more opportunities to sell internationally. In addition, there is also an Enterprise Edition called Shopify Plus, which is intended for wholesalers. Check out our Shopify Plus videos in the playlist.

B2B / B2C - Who can do what?

Now let’s move on to the design. The basis of this is the theme. For all those who don’t know what this is, we have made a video for both store systems, which can be found in the playlist in the upper right corner. Neither of the two has the edge here. Both Shopware and Shopify have both free and paid themes to offer, which are adapted to just about any industry and are designed to be truly modern and UX oriented. But what about B2B and B2C? Here you have to say quite clearly that Shopware has the nose in front. B2B stores can be better mapped by Shopware, at least with the Enterprise Edition – which of course has its price. Shopify is designed more for B2C commerce. But what you have to admit to both store systems is the fact that they can boast with well-known companies that use their systems. For example, Gymshark, Tesla, Pari and Kylie Cosmetics are among the Shopify enthusiasts, whereas Shopware boasts names like Douglas, BVB and Aston Martin.

Should you turn to cloud-based software?

In the Shopware vs. Shopify question, it’s important which solution you prefer: do you want to have your online store with the provider on the cloud or your own server? Cloud-based solutions have the advantage that you get automatic updates and immediate scalability. Unfortunately, however, cloud solutions incur continuous costs. Shopify only offers cloud solutions, while with Shopware you are flexible: you can start with the local option on your own server and later, switch to the cloud and vice versa. Due to the intuitive design of the open source software, Shopware is also ahead when it comes to topics such as individuality and community, whereas Shopify scores with its speed.

Shopware vs. Shopify - Conclusion

Summa Summarum, then, the following can be said. With Shopify you have a great option without having to have programming skills, with a low entry barrier to set up a professional store on the legs. You’ll have a free connection to Instagram Shopping, you won’t have to worry about hosting, so you can spend more time building the structure of your startup. However, if you have already earned enough and can afford the Professional Edition of Shopware, as well as have the necessary budget for one or the other man-hour of a Shopware developer for customization available, then you should best be advised on the possibilities of Shopware by an agency. Your advantages are the unlimited expandability and scalability, the omitted commission model and the possibility to offer B2B as well.
