In some of our episodes we have already talked about SEO for any platform. Whether Amazon SEO, eBay SEO, Gambio SEO, Shopify or Shopware SEO. But which tool has not yet been touched upon, but which is one of the most important search engine optimization tools for Google is – Screaming Frog. What the Screaming Frog Spider website crawler is all about, we will tell you in this article.
First of all, as usual, the definition – So what is this Screaming Frog SEO program? From this it is already clear that it is a program. You can download it for Windows or Mac. This tool will then crawl your web pages. The Screaming Frog sends its bot and runs through your page. In doing so, it follows all the links, calls each URL and collects all the information about it. For example, after your crawl you will get information about the robots meta details, the status codes, the snippets, the file sizes, canonical links, hreflang and much more.
But let’s look at that in detail now. This is what Screaming Frog looks like and provides a lot of data at a glance. Let’s take a closer look at this. First of all, you need to enter a URL to be crawled. For this purpose, we now simply enter “cbd.de” completely arbitrarily.
You will see all crawled addresses in the main field. This includes images, but also Java scripts, Html code etc. If you want to filter the whole thing, you can do so here for example. specify only images or use html to display only the pages and subpages. You now have the possibility to export this data, e.g. in order to save it as a file. in Excel and see if all existing pages are intended or if some of them were created automatically and do not really need to exist and could be deleted. Or you can export the data and send it to your SEO expert so he can evaluate it.
Furthermore, all important SEO parameters of this page are displayed. Ex. the status code with which you can find 404 pages. Or also the metadata, H1 and H2 headings, canonical links, hreflangs if any have been set, you can keep an eye on the filesize of your images and so on. In addition to the OnPage analysis and thus optimization, but can then bspw. also be looked which of these pages were indexed for Google. If pages have not been indexed, the reason is displayed in the indexability status. Here for example that the page has been “canonicalised”. For all non SEO’s – the Canonical Tag is set when you want to avoid that the Google Bot sees your page as duplicate content. Online stores e.g. whose products can be sorted once by color and once by price, run the risk of being considered duplicate content, which is why they integrate the Canonical tag.
If you want to get an overall impression of your site, you can take a look at the section on the right. Here we can see how many URL’s are available, so how many subpages you already have. Then, for the internal pages, you can see how the relative proportion of HTML and Java Script code, to CSS and images is. You can take a closer look at the external links and, for example. also check the API connections to Google Search Console, Google Analytics or PageSpeed Insights. All in all, the Screaming Frog SEO Spider tool is very comprehensive and requires prior SEO knowledge to be able to use it fully. So now not necessarily suitable for online store operators without prior experience. They should rather read out the data, export it and send it to the SEO experts. In summary, the tool visualizes a lot of data, quickly at a glance. This is very, very important for a marketer to regularly check websites for errors or potentials. To be honest, though, it has to be said that this is a professional tool. In other words, assistance such as that we provide to e.g. of Yoast SEO from the last episode are missing here. However, if these can be dispensed with, the Screaming Frog SEO Spider website crawler is a powerful tool.
Finally, as usual, the price overview. You can test the SEO tool for free at first. However, the bigger your website gets, the sooner you may reach your limits. Here you can see that the basic functions are covered in the free version and 500 URLs can be crawled. If you want to get an overview of the just shown API accesses you need the paid version, but you can crawl unlimited URLs with it. Consequently, the paid version costs a little over 170€ per year. So take a look at the free version first and see if it’s enough for you.
