Shopify vs. PrestaShop

Canadian SaaS store system vs. French open-souce store system

In this online store comparison between Shopify vs PrestaShop, we contrast these two store systems. On the one hand, the intuitive, Canadian cloud store system, on the other hand, the French open-source store system. Which one is better for whom?

Shopify vs. PrestaShop - Registration or Installation

Most of you will already know the basic information about Shopify from the previous videos or blog posts, otherwise I recommend you to have a look at our online store comparison playlist. PrestaShop is an open source store system similar to Magento, so it must be self-hosted accordingly. Unlike Magento, however, it is significantly less power hungry. It can be used completely free of charge in the basic version. That is, to try this once, you don’t need anything other than an ordinary server or a local virtual emulation, and you can install PrestaShop in a few minutes. How you then set up the store functionally, you can see in our video.

These are the PrestaShop USPs

Otherwise, one of PrestaShop’s USPs is its active and really large community. If there is a problem, you will be helped or the appropriate plugin will be recommended. As with our other store comparison videos, it depends a lot on what you sell, how much you sell, and what your demands are. In most cases, complex product variants can also be implemented with PrestaShop, but this entails a steep learning curve that almost makes the use of a PrestaShop agency indispensable. On the other hand, PrestaShop’s themes are much more extensive and, above all, more customizable. This is not to say that this is difficult with Shopify, not at all, but rather that with PrestaShop you have more options and variation to customize these themes. On the other hand, Shopify is a little bit ahead in terms of usability, which has already been mentioned before. Shopify’s PageBuilder is super simple and intuitive.

Shopify vs. PrestaShop - Summary

So you can say that PrestaShop offers you more possibilities to design your store the way you want it, which is already more possible with the open source system than with Shopify as a cloud system. However, when it comes to setting up a store on your own without any prior knowledge, Shopify is probably faster and easier to deal with.

What both of them score a plus point for, on the other hand, which we had rather neglected in the other videos so far, is the compatibility with the merchandise management of JTL software. Both store systems, PrestaShop as well as Shopify can be connected to JTL-Wawi and thus integrated into your system.

Shopify vs. PrestaShop - The pricing models

But let’s talk about the pricing model in more detail. What is virtually indispensable with Shopify are the transaction fees. How high they are depends on your plan. The basic cost of the plans ranges from $29 to $299 per month. Such price plans do not exist at PrestaShop. You download the “installer” files, install them and you can start. Financial expenses then arise from add-ons and themes. What is more favorable for you in the end is a matter of calculation. If you don’t really see through that, feel free to ask for advice from us as a Shopify agency and PrestaShop agency.
