Is Instagram doing away with likes? - What is the background?
Already since 2019, Instagram has started hiding Likes in different countries and regions. Again and again, they launched experiments for this purpose, in which users were temporarily unable to see the Likes under other posts. First, let’s take a look at why Instagram wants to do away with Likes in the first place. According to senior Instagram and Facebook executives, this is all about user health. You want to protect them, because these days we only measure success on social media by likes. Many users do not cope with this pressure. Whether celebrity or student, several studies have shown that Likes cause users to doubt your appearance, get sick, or question your abilities. Likes are reported to trigger or increase depression. So by removing the Likes, they want to increase the user experience of the app and improve its image
Enable or disable Likes - you decide
At this point, you can still decide for yourself whether or not you want Likes to be displayed on your posts. You can decide that when you post, or even after the content has already been posted. You can also decide in general whether you want to see the likes of other users or whether they can see them on your posts. If you decide to do so, the complete number of likes will be hidden. However, if you have hidden Likes from other users, you can still see them. So you decide what you and others can see in terms of Likes.

In summary, you have three options. You can firstly decide that you can no longer see likes on Instagram in general. Secondly, that users can no longer see the Likes of your posts and thirdly, you can also select only certain posts where the number of Likes should not be shown. At this point in time, you can still decide for yourself which variant you would like to choose. Whether that will change remains to be seen. Therefore, assess for yourself which variant is better or healthier for you. For influencers or companies, likes are of course always a good indicator to measure how much value a post has and whether it was successful or not. Instagram leaves open whether Likes are still important for the algorithm. Because if they are, then it will be difficult for users without a Like indicator to check your success and therefore your engagement in terms of the algorithm, as they will no longer be able to see which content performed well.
