Comparison of North American store systems

In this online store comparison between Shopify vs Magento, we contrast these two North American store systems. On the one hand the intuitive cloud store system, on the other hand the almost unlimited scalable open source store system. Which one is better for whom?

Shopify vs. Magento - Two North Americans Compared

This article will be about the comparison between the Adobe store system Magento and the cloud system Shopify. As a small spoiler in advance can be said that both store systems have a very different target audience, which suggests that they differ in some respects.

Cloud system vs. open source self-hosting system

The first difference starts with the base. For Magento you need a server or for Mac users MAMP as a local virtual server emulation, for which we had already made a video. That means Magento is self-hosted, so it takes time, know-how and money to get set up. How to do this you can also read our store setup blog in which we set up a complete Magento store in 10 minutes. Shopify, on the other hand, is a Software as a Service store system and thus works in the cloud. That means you just have to go to the Shopify URL, register and you can start for free. That’s only for 14 days, but then Shopify’s pricing plans don’t break the bank. Magento can be used for free for as long as you like, but the version only covers the absolute basics, which won’t be enough for most merchants.

Shopify vs. Magento - What are the respective USPs?

The strengths of Magento are then the unlimited scalability. The commerce version will cost quite a bit and you will have to work with an agency to set it up, but as an open source system, Magento doesn’t set you any limits. The situation is different with Shopify. There is also the enterprise version Shopify Plus, for which we have also already filmed a video series, but ultimately all data resides on Shopify servers and can only be customized and changed to a limited extent. Shopify knows how to convince with several extensions and modern looking themes. However, these extensions are also a plus with Magento 2.

Shopify vs. Magento - The Summary

So you can say that Magento is the more powerful store system that can be expanded almost indefinitely, but at the same time it is also power hungry and thus demands a lot from the servers. With Shopify, usability is the very clear USP in this comparison. Without any previous knowledge you can start in a few minutes and with the help of our videos you can get your Shopify store up and running piece by piece within a day. In the end, the decisive factor is what your product range looks like. many and complex variants articles. Also crucial is where you want to go in the future. You can’t clarify that across the board within a video. That’s why we are available to you as a Shopify agency, but also Magento agency, to advise you individually what makes more sense in your case.

What about legal certainty?

Finally, it should be said that we have the peculiarity in this comparison that neither of the two is a German system, but both are located overseas. For you, this means that the stores do not comply with the European will comply with GDPR standards. Here, therefore, adjustment work must also be carried out once again in retrospect. You can find out exactly what this includes in our playlist “How to make your online store legally secure”. We’ll hear from you again in the next episode. Otherwise, feel free to make an appointment to get advice.
