Shopify PageSpeed Optimization

How to optimize your Shopify apps

In this Shopify SEO tutorial we will show you how to perform a Shopify PageSpeed optimization. With the help of the Google PageSpeed Insights tool, we uncover which apps take a long time to load and then use this to improve the loading speed of your store.

Shopify PageSpeed Optimization - Better Google Rankings through Shorter Load Times

One of the most important starting points to increase your conversion rate as a Shopify merchant is a Google ranking on the first page, if not on position 1. But how do you achieve that? Unfortunately, this cannot be attributed to a single point, but depends on many factors. How much competition is there for this keyword? How long have you had your domain? Is your store optimized for on-page SEO and do you also have a backlink strategy for off-page SEO? These are all points that are important, which have now been added to this year’s Core Web Vitals. We have linked the appropriate Google SEO playlist here.

Google PageSpeed Insights Tool

A special criterion that will interest us in this article is PageSpeed. This can be analyzed using the Pagespeed Insights tool from Google itself. The whole thing is displayed in a 0 – 100 grid, both for the desktop view and the mobile view on tablets and smartphones. You will notice that the mobile value will always be lower than the desktop value, because the devices are less performant, as well as the loading speed is lower due to network fluctuations and the requirements for the optimization are therefore significantly higher. We ran the whole thing several times for our completely empty Shopify test store and got results between 82 and 90 for mobile and 90 to 99 for the desktop version, which are already ideal values. If the whole thing were to be done e.g. test with Google’s own services like YouTube or put the big marketplace giant with A under the microscope, you would have significantly worse results, at least not 100 points. This is because you always have to compromise on PageSpeed optimization. These tradeoffs are often between quality and compression as is the case for images, videos, graphics and the like.

How to find out which apps take a long time to load

However, for this episode we will take a look at the app optimization. In order to better demonstrate the whole thing to you, we have now equipped our test store with 10 apps. Included in it is a free shipping bar, an image slider, a live chat app and so on. But how do we know if these apps also affect our loading speed. That’s where Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool comes in. We now have our store analyzed again and find that there has been a bit of a change. However, not as much as we had hoped for our video. That speaks to Shopify app optimization. Nevertheless, we can show you what to look for in your case.

Shopify PageSpeed Optimization - This is what matters

If you scroll down a bit, you will see that one item to improve is the execution time of the JavaScript. If you press there once, the hints with the longest loading time will fold down. For one thing, we still have the password backup in there, which costs us 422ms. The second point, on the other hand, looks more cryptic. But Google gives us a hand here too, because the app assignment is right behind it. In our case, this is the Tidio Chat app, which is our live chat. The second app is CornerCart and again Tidio shows up. But we have to honestly say here that these are still very short loading times. As a guideline you can take 500ms. If a position exceeds this value, you should be concerned.

Shopify PageSpeed Optimization - Reconsider if all apps are necessary

But what to do then, we will come to that in a moment. Before that, a quick tip. If you don’t know what to do with the information in parentheses, because you don’t have the app with the name you think, try to find out the developer or the developer company behind the products. For example, with our Free Shipping Bar, it’s Hextom. Often you will find this information in the Google analysis and then you will know how to assign it. But now to the scope of action, what you can do if your PageSpeed does not meet the expectations. Firstly, you should delete all inactive apps, because they can also cause the loading speed to decrease in the background. Otherwise, it is your individual decision as a store operator to weigh whether certain apps really need to be or the speed outweighs. Accordingly, switches it to inactive and deletes it.

Deletes inactive apps in any case
