Rumors have been going around for some time that Mark Zuckerberg is planning to change the name of Facebook. On 28.10. This year, the time had come: Facebook became Meta. Also the video conferencing device “Facebook Portal” will become “Meta Portal” and also the stock exchange code is to be changed from FB to MVRS at the beginning of December. However, this does not mean that people will now no longer follow each other on facebook.com but on Meta, because for the time being nothing will change for the Facebook.com platform. In fact, the name change does not refer to the Facebook social network, but to the Facebook Inc. corporation.
But why does Facebook become meta?
Zuckerberg said Facebook is an icon and one of the most used products in the history of the world, but it no longer reflects the full breadth of the company. The facebook.com platform has defined the Group to date. For a long time, the Facebook network was the company’s best-known and most successful product. Moreover, everything had started with the platform, which is why Zuckerberg also called his company Facebook at that time. In the meantime, this has changed, because other products have also become strongly established. Instagram, for example, has become huge and has replaced Facebook in Germany. WhatsApp also belongs to the Facebook group and is one of Facebook’s most successful offerings. Therefore, Facebook is now also to become only a product of Meta, which of course nevertheless has a very high value. In summary, Zuckerberg puts Facebook on a par with Instagram and WhatsApp. In addition, the name is also associated with negative headlines, as just recently serious allegations were made against the company by a former Facebook employee. They are said to do too little about the damage they do.
The name change also comes for another reason, as Zuckerberg is pursuing a big goal with his company. After all, he wants to develop the next generation of the Internet with his company. This next generation is to bear the name “Metaversum”. The name Meta is therefore a reference to the metaverse and closely connected with it. The term meta means beyond in Greek, and Zuckerberg describes that there is still much to develop. It is also interesting to note that the term metaverse first appeared in the science fiction novel “Snow Crash” by Neal Stephenson. In the novel, the characters repeatedly escape into the metaverse and move there with avatars. For Facebook, this metaverse is now part of their strategy, with billions now being invested to drive it forward. In Europe alone, 10,000 jobs are to be created for this purpose.
But how can one imagine the metaverse?
Zuckerberg demonstrated a few examples of this. Virtual meetings should feel like all employees are in the same room, and video games should feel like all players are in the same place. Adam Mosseri, the Head of Instagram, also commented on the metaverse in an Instagram Q&A. He told us that his family and he lived far apart and that meeting through the metaverse would feel very real. He said “I can watch a movie with my brother and if I look to the right I could see Him and his reactions.” Virtual reality glasses will give users access to the metaverse. The Meta company is currently even working with the Ray-Ban eyewear brand on various models. Zuckerberg wants the new name Meta to establish itself as a brand. Nothing changes for him. He remains Chairman of the Executive Board of the company and holds the majority of the voting rights.
