Shopify vs. WooCommerce

Cloud store system or WordPress store plugin?

Shopify vs WooCommerce or even cloud store system vs WordPress store plugin. Which store system is intended for which target group? We show you which store system costs how much, what skills you need in each case to set it up and where the respective advantages lie.

Shopify vs. WooCommerce - Which is which?

We won’t say anything more about Shopify – a Canadian store system that was one of the first cloud store systems on the market. WooCommerce, on the other hand, is considered neither a SaaS, nor an open source system like Shopware, but a store plugin. Because at the end of the day, it’s just an extension to WordPress. WordPress must be self-hosted. Then you can install the WooCommerce plugin for free.

Shopify vs. WooCommerce - The cost

Regarding the costs, it should be said that WooCommerce only costs something due to the hosting fees. However, if you want to have your own domain, remove the WordPress ads, and possibly benefit from other privileges, such as The 50,000 WordPress plugins, then you should access a plan. The price range is very broad. You would theoretically get by with a 7€ monthly plan, but you could also pay more than double what you would pay for Shopify and then have some more features, like espw. the advanced SEO tools that we can really recommend.

With Shopify, the $25 plan is enough to get your business started in the beginning. Another advantage is that WooCommerce is open source. You can make any adjustments you want to the open source system, which is not possible to the extent with Shopify. Now let’s move on to the expansions – there is probably no clear winner there. Both stores know how to shine with a large number of app extensions. One of the plugins that probably every WooCommerce store owner will use is Germanized.

This makes your store legally compliant for the German market, which has to be solved in Shopify itself or implemented together with the Händlerbund or Trusted Shops first. Which Shopify plugins we would recommend, on the other hand, you can find out on the page. Shopify also knows how to shine with well-known customers, which we already proved in the last episode. In addition, there is the Mercedes Benz Shop, as well as Polaroidoriginals and Spectacles.com.

Shopify vs. WooCommerce - Simple or Complex?

The good thing about both systems is that you don’t need to have programming or design skills. If we have already shown in two videos that both Shopify and WooCommerce provide modern, stylish themes customized for any industry. Although you have to leave the one or other thaler for it, but this is nothing compared to the hourly rates of a designer or programmer. Let’s get to the bottom line. When would you choose WooCommerce?

Why choose WooCommerce?

The main reason to choose WooCommerce is the flexibility and control it offers you. However, if you plan to sell simple products, with few variations, you won’t need this flexibility. However, if you want to sell things that are a bit more complex in terms of variation, the ordering process, or the pricing structure, you’ll probably appreciate the flexibility of WooCommerce. Moreover, with WooCommerce you are always the master of your data and can customize it as you want.

Why choose Shopify?

You’ll probably choose Shopify if you’re looking for a simple and, most importantly, beginner-friendly way to start an eCommerce store. As long as you don’t plan to sell complicated products with many variations, you should be able to find your way around Shopify’s system just fine. Also, if you don’t want to spend time maintaining your store (or just don’t want to think about technology in general), then that’s another reason to consider – Shopify’s simplicity.
