How to become an online retailer is what we reveal in this eCommerce tutorial, explaining how to get your products, which products are recommended, what to consider when setting up your online store, and ultimately how to get customers to your store page.
The foundation of any online retailer is first and foremost its product. Because without products, there is no trade. These don’t necessarily have to be haptic products such as clothing, technical articles or books, but for example, “haptic” products. also simply books as eBooks, vouchers or software – in other words, digital products. Depending on what you choose, you will face different challenges and requirements. Haptic products need to be stored, whereas digital products such as software require much more extensive protection.
However, what is much more important to consider first is the balance between mass and niche products.
If you sell something that everyone sells, you have to pay much more attention to details, how you stand out from the crowd. If you have a niche product, there won’t be much competition. However, if the niche is so small that you can’t even cover your expenses with the number of products you sell, it’s probably a losing proposition. Therefore, before you start, you should do a keyword research with tools such as. the Google Ads Keyword Planner. This way you know roughly how many people are searching for the respective products and can thus make a more informed decision.
In addition, you should ask each haptic product these questions and scrutinize them accordingly
This should then result in which products would be suitable and which would rather not. If you have found the perfect product, point 1 is ticked off. Now it’s time to look for a supplier. One place to start would be Google again. Enter your product + wholesale at the end to find a supplier in Germany. Another option would be to source your goods from abroad from sites like Alibaba or Aliexpress. The advantage would be lower purchase prices, but on the other hand for this customs duties and import tax. At the end of the day, it’s a calculation. Compare the respective fees and see which option would be most profitable for your industry. Once you have decided, it’s time for the store software.
Meanwhile, there are countless providers from Shopify, Shopware, JTL-Shop, Gambio, PrestaShop, Magento and, and, and. To discuss the advantages of each store system would take hours. Therefore, if you want to learn more about it, check out our playlists. We have already produced videos for each of the store systems just mentioned.
In advance, however, we can give you the following tips on what you should do to build a successful online store.
1. know your target group: this is the be-all and end-all. For example, if you sell Dog collars, you address with it possibly rather families, since they have very often dogs and cats as pets. On the other hand, if you sell more CBD products, you will address a completely different target group. Your choice of colors, use of images, wording in the texts, etc. should also be geared to the target group.
2. present your product as high quality as possible. That is, in high-resolution images or product videos. If you don’t have the know-how yourself, you are welcome to contact eBakery.
The third point is trust: your online store should radiate trust. You achieve this through a technically flawless system, but also through customer reviews. A functioning system also includes points such as Responsive Web Design.
So after you’ve decided on a software, it’s important to maintain legal compliance. So for example. an accurate imprint and a privacy policy tailored to your needs. Providers we can recommend for this are e.g. Trusted Shops or the Händlerbund, with which you can generate individual legal texts or have them created for you.
Once your legally compliant, product-filled online store is up and running, your goal should be to draw attention to it. That means SEO and marketing for you.
All pages in your online store should be optimized for Google. This also means that you should maintain your sitemap and pay attention to search engine optimization measures. This should be preceded by a keyword analysis to find out which keywords your customers are searching for and then use them in your texts, image file names, headlines etc. Besides these SEO measures, you should become active on social media like Facebook and Instagram. For example, if you sell clothing, you can have models represent them, photograph them and present them on your channels. Another approach would be influencer marketing. That means you send your products to influencers, who then present and rate them to their community. Discounts are also a proven way to attract attention and expand your customer base.
