There are many different theories about how the Instagram feed works. Instagram itself, however, states the following: The Instagram feed is all about the things that matter to a user. When a user refreshes their feed, posts that Instagram thinks they are most likely to like are shown first. In the meantime, not only posts from people you follow are displayed here, but Instagram also shows accounts or posts that might match the user’s interests.

In this video, we’ll show you how the Instagram feed works and what you can do to stop missing posts.

In general, however, it can be said from our practical experience as a social media service provider that the feed mainly shows posts from accounts that you follow. However, the order is not chronological. This means that posts are not displayed in the order in which they were posted.

How Instagram rates the feeds

Instagram determines the order of the feed itself, using the following factors:

  • Interest: Instagram displays posts higher up where there might be a high likelihood that a user is very interested in it.
  • Date: Instagram looks at the date a post was posted.
  • Interaction: Instagram shows posts from users with whom you have interacted more in the past higher in the feed than other posts. Interactions from users without an account are also included.

Occasionally, the feed will even show posts from people that are already a few days old. Instagram also shows these older posts to prevent forgetting a person you follow.

Notifications should be enabled

Despite these measures that Instagram takes to ensure that we don’t miss any posts, it still often happens that users don’t see important posts, such as those from their friends, in their feed.

But to make sure you don’t miss any important posts, we’ll now show you how to activate a post notification for an account. This will inform you as soon as a certain person posts something on Instagram.

  1. First, go to the profile of the person you want to enable notifications for.
  2. Now tap on the bell in the upper right corner.
  3. Here you will get a selection where you can choose which articles you don’t want to miss.
  4. Select the notifications that are important to you here and confirm your selection each time.
