The right Instagram hashtag strategy can be either free, paid or time-consuming. Depending on what you value, what your goals are and when you started. We’ll show you three strategies for finding the right hashtags for your niche and using them for your Instagram posts.

Hashtags on Instagram are like snow chains in the winter mountains, you need them to get ahead. At least this is true if you have not yet achieved significant size and thus reach. That’s why we’re taking a look at Instagram hashtag strategies in this video.
So how do you as a retailer find the right hashtags for your online store Instagram channel. We will take a close look at a free variant, a paid variant and an individual variant.

Instagram hashtag strategy with the app Tagstagram

The first free strategy is accomplished with the app Tagstagram. These are available for both Android and iOs. The first thing that stands out positively is that it is very clear. You can search for topics and then find subtopics for these topics and receive corresponding hashtag suggestions for your 30 possible hashtags. In our Instagram screencast, we demonstrate how we search hashtags for our men’s fashion online store. We go to the category “Fashion” and the right hashtags for men’s fashion are already displayed. You can simply copy this hashtag and place it in your post.

The paid app Hashtag Expert has a lot to offer

If you want to have even more specific hashtags and analyze them individually afterwards, we recommend Hashtag Expert. This app is unfortunately chargeable, but offers some more features. As you can see, you can view the currently trending hashtags, look at the trending hashtags of your topic, but also analyze personal tags that you have deposited in the app to gradually gather the stack of your perfect hashtag and thus gain more followers as you reach the right audience for your products.
Annual cost of Hashtag Expert is 38€.

Instagram hashtag strategy from eBakery

Whether variant 1 or 2, both are very good methods for the start. Strategy number 3, which we also use at eBakery is more time-consuming, but very accurate and non-arbitrary. What most hashtag generators do is pick out the most popular hashtags for each topic. However, if 10 million people put on the same hashtag, you will only be displayed for a fraction of a second and disappear into the depths of Instagram. Therefore, it would be better to start by picking out 10 hashtags with low engagement, 10 hashtags with medium engagement, and 10 hashtags with high engagement. At the same time, anything over 5 million should be avoided. This can be determined, for example, by with the desktop app Flume, which costs a one-time fee of 9.99€, which is completely justified in my eyes. You enter your hashtag, for example“#ecommerce” and you can see that this keyword is very generic.“#ecommercebusiness”, on the other hand, falls within your usable range. You can do the same with all your main terms and Flume will show you longtail keywords as well as the participation number.
So you can search 10 hashtags with a number between 10,000 – 100,000, 10 hashtags between 100,000 – 750,000 and 10 hashtags between 750,000 and 5 million.
This takes a few minutes, but is worth it afterwards.
