How to create a category and subcategory in Magento 2
Create a category in Magento 2 and thus create structure for your online store – we explain how this works in this Magento Screencast Tutorial.
There you can find the Magento 2 categories and create them
You can find Magento 2 categories in the Catalog and Categories menu. In Magento 2’s category management, the category tree is displayed on the left side as a branched directory structure, with the root level – i.e. the root category – being at the top in our case here. All other subcategories will then join them. Let’s demonstrate this and create a new category called “Home” by creating a subcategory that we want to activate and also integrate into the menu. Therefore, nothing needs to be changed here. After saving, you will see that this category joins the root category.
How to create your Magento 2 category tree construct
We now want to create another clothing category, so we select our Default Category, since we want to create a subcategory for it, and enter the desired name. In this we now want to create a subcategory in the main category Clothing again. Thus, we have created our category tree structure and can move on to the more detailed category items.
When creating your Magento 2 categories also pay attention to SEO

Customize the design of Magento 2 categories
Here you can view and edit the articles placed in the category. The design can either be individualized or taken from the parent category, which can be activated with the switch in the design category. So much for the detailed settings. Otherwise, if you want to change the structure within your category tree, you can simply drag and drop it. For example the subcategory “Yoga Clothing” can also be changed to the third main category afterwards or the whole thing can be undone in the same way.
