When do you need an agency? What are the advantages of a freelancer and do you even need both for Shopify or can you take it into your own hands. We let you know in this blog when what is better and what to look out for. What does it look like if you’re a digital native, can use a Mac or PC in your sleep, and have completed training as a media designer, will you be able to navigate Shopify on your own? What you can at least say is – if it works, it will work with Shopify. Because you don’t have to take care of hosting, nor do you have to know how to code. Shopify is a SaaS store system, which means that you use it in the cloud, do not have to worry about server updates, but can start directly after a short registration. There are countless plugin and app extensions and a very large community. Diligent viewers of our channel will remember from the store system comparison series that Shopify had the larger market share in almost every comparison. Accordingly, many dealers are in the same boat and have the same problems.
There is also support, but there is no payment system like in Shopware or JTL, which is easy on your wallet, but also makes the workload correspondingly high. This means that there is email, chat and phone support, but how long the waiting time will be is uncertain. This is precisely why the Shopify affiliate program exists. But what you really have to give Shopify credit for is the well-developed documentation, here you can always find an answer, at least for basic things. As you can see, there’s no end to the help available – so there’s no reason why you shouldn’t take a look at Shopify for 14 days free of charge, try it out and then, if you need to deal with more complex issues, call in a freelancer or agency. But when is which better now? We start with the agency this time. If Shopify is so easy, why do you need an agency? You can compare the whole thing with the most popular sport in Europe. In the end, all you need is a pair of shoes, a ball and two jerseys as goalposts to exercise it. Fun, nothing against it, but probably won’t make waves in the short term. If you compare that with the 13 million viewers for a Champions League final, it’s a completely different world. It’s similar with your Shopify store. We have shown that you can set up a store in 12 minutes, but will you sell with it? Not at first.
It all comes down to the uniqueness, the sales psychology strategy, as well as the user experience and usability of your store. Of course, as a merchant you can learn the ropes and study other stores and combine the best of them, but the question is whether you really want to invest this time in it or rather focus on your core competencies as a merchant and benefit from the experience of an agency. A well-positioned agency has experts in every area, on-page SEO, off-page SEO, social media marketing, design, video production, web development, and so on. But all this you could now also look for individually together. You could, but in practice this rarely leads to a satisfactory result. Because what an agency can offer is the external organization and structure. The individual experts have worked together before and have a project manager who unites the whole. With 10 different freelancers you end up being the project manager and that again costs time and nerves.
In terms of security, you are also much safer with an agency, because issues such as bogus self-employment, loss of work or financial security no longer need to concern you. And where can freelancers score then? Often you will get the same quality from a freelancer, because he is an expert in one thing. So qualitatively, one does not necessarily have to be worse than the other. Also the contact is more direct, you can communicate directly with the freelancer, which will also allow spontaneous changes.
So what does eBakery advise now? First of all, we do not advise you to try the cloud store system yourself, because the more you have worked with it, the more you will understand the activities behind it. You can test Shopify for 14 days and then purchase the cheapest plan for just under 25€ per month. Depending on how strong the competition is in your niche and what your sales goals are in the end, you can then search the forum for isolated questions or describe your concerns directly or, if necessary, call in a freelancer for a quick turnaround for the individual area.
However, if you want to bring the store to the next level or if you want to have a well thought-out concept right from the start, i.e. SEO compliant with high quality content, a well thought-out user experience incl. a good design, then you need to have a good website. If you want to get started with an effective on-page and off-page SEO marketing concept and want to enter the Champions League without waiting for years, then you need a capable Shopify agency with manpower, experience and team spirit.
