Switch back to the chronological feed on Facebook

To switch back from the engagement-based feed

Now it is possible to switch back to the chronological feed on Facebook. We’ll explain what the difference is between the engagement-based feed and the former chronological feed, and show you how to set the latter back up on your end.

Do you know this yourself, when the feed was over after scrolling?

Some of you may remember the early days of Instagram and Facebook. Back then, people used the platforms mainly to see news from their family and friends. To do this, people scrolled through the feed until it eventually ended and wrote to each other’s wall. The majority of users left the app after scrolling through the feed. However, Facebook wanted users to spend even more time in the app, so they introduced an engagement-based feed and ended the chronological feed period.

Switch back to the chronological feed on Facebook - The differences

The difference with a chronological feed is that the engagement-based feed shows users only the posts they are most likely to interact with. An algorithm determines the content based on a number of different factors. Meanwhile, it is even known that the angry emoji on Facebook is weighted more heavily by the algorithm. So, this type of feed also ensures that harmful content goes viral easier, as it often evokes stronger emotions from users. Experts see this as a problem. They claim Facebook inspires people to anger. However, since changes to the Facebook feed would mean users spending less time in the app again for the company, we can assume they won’t fundamentally change your algorithm.

Switch back to the chronological feed on Facebook - Here's how

However, if you want the chronological feed back, you have the option to do so, because Facebook gives users themselves the choice of which feed they want to see. However, the setting for the chronological feed only lasts for one session and therefore needs to be adjusted every session again. To make this setting, you must first go to the menu in your Facebook app. Now press “Recent posts and favorites”. In the desktop version of Facebook, you can find the setting on the home page in the menu on the left. Select “Recent Posts” here and your feed will be sorted chronologically. Instagram unfortunately doesn’t have an option for this yet.

Will Facebook switch back permanently?

The switch can ensure that negative posts don’t get as much play because they get less attention. After a few hours, they would be replaced by new posts and would not be brought up again days later. However, it is very unlikely that Facebook will return to the chronological feed for good. In addition to the feed, should you want to change your reach? Then we will be happy to help you.
