But what do online retailers do wrong, especially at the beginning?
The online store itself is one thing. Here are things to consider such as:
However, these are points that are also taken into account by beginners who have acquired this knowledge through YouTube or who work with an agency or freelancer. By the way, what the difference between agency and freelancer is and when you should prefer what, we have also already covered in a detailed video. Both should know something about your craft, so there is not the issue here. This exists when the agency does not think holistically. Because an existing store is not enough. In the beginning, you will generate virtually no traffic if no precautions have been taken. That is, the mistake is to calculate too tightly, as a result of which retailers must make sales from the day of launch in order to avoid going bankrupt in the shortest possible time. But you should not think like that or advertise in advance. In this case, a marketing concept should be worked out at an early stage with a holistic eCommerce agency or a pure eCommerce agency in cooperation with an SEO agency. Of this, for example, can be be a “content marketing” approach, especially for lifestyle products. This results in error 2.
There are short, medium and long term marketing methods. A short term are e.g. Ads. The long-term methods then again include “content marketing”. Therefore, the mistake of beginners here is to expect quick results through long-term marketing strategies. But let’s assume you have now watched the video and taken into account errors 1 and 2 and managed to drive traffic to your store through paid ads, but also organically. Now the first months are over, you have also made sales, but the profit does not cover your running costs. It sounds absurd, but it happens far too often. The error is therefore incorrect pricing, i.e. prices that are too low. This may be because you are trying to undercut the marketplace prices. What you must not forget, however, is that your price calculation must also include advertising and company investments. That means you should cover at least a 50% profit margin with the sales
What can you now take away as learning? It is never good to have your company standing on one pillar. It would therefore be better to pursue a multichannel strategy in order to sell both in the store and on marketplaces. You should develop a marketing strategy early on, consisting of short-, medium-, and long-term methods, but also not overestimate the traffic generated by it in the beginning. Plan for a financial cushion and calculate your prices wisely. If you are overwhelmed with this, that is no reason to bury your head in the sand.
