We compare Magento vs WooCommerce in this video. Which e-commerce store system suits you best? We look at both systems in terms of usability, scalability, extensibility and the price component.
Today, we will once again devote ourselves to two very popular store systems, of which it can already be said that they address a different target group. Still, there’s definitely an intersection that we’re on the trail of in this episode. We are talking about Magento and WooCommerce. We will examine these online store systems for usability, scalability, extensions and the price aspect.
First of all, both systems can be used free of charge in their basic form. If you’re interested in trying them out, we’ll link you to our videos on how to install them. Both can also be completely customized to your own needs. As OpenSource systems, they are completely customizable via code adaptation, if you have the necessary programming skills or work together with an agency. Magento is a standalone, autonomous content management system for online commerce. WooCommerce, on the other hand, is a plugin extension for WordPress. So without WordPress no WooCommerce. Both systems are self-hosted – so these are not SaaS systems. However, it has to be said that Magneto is significantly more resource-hungry, so pay attention to that when choosing a hosting provider.
But what about usability? This does not mean the usability for the customer at the end, that ultimately depends on you, what you then make of the store. What is meant, therefore, is the user-friendliness for you as a merchant or frontend/backend developer. Here it can be said that the acclimatization period is significantly higher with Magento. The system has a more complex structure, but it also offers more options out of the box. WooCommerce needs more plugins for this to offer the features that already come with Magneto. On the other hand, it is more intuitive to use, clearly structured, less complex and requires less training time and, at the end of the day, fewer skills. If you are already familiar with WordPress through your blog, that would be half the battle.
On the other hand, Magneto is clearly ahead in terms of scalability. Magneto is considered the system for giant projects. This also becomes clear when you look at built with, which large companies rely on the system. Starting from Acer, over LG, Nintendo, Bayer up to Tommy Hilfiger. In other words, a system for the really big players. Provided that the Commerce version is used here, but we’ll get to that when it comes to the financial component. But also in WooCommerce you can map any product types, whether single products, virtual, downloadable products, variant items, etc.
Now for the extensions. Magento offers a very wide scope already out of the box. Multistore and Multilingualism is no problem for Magento. WooCommerce is in no way inferior to this, but does not provide all the features out of the box, but makes them available with the help of over 50,000 free plugins. This is then a curse and a blessing in equal measure. They are very easy to install and serve their purpose, however, each new plugin carries a risk of clashing with others and causing errors on the site. Especially with upcoming updates.
In terms of price, a distinction must be made here. If you can manage with the Magento standard, the costs are also manageable. As I said, you can start virtually free of charge. However, it must be noted that the server will cost more, because more powerful, the customizations are significantly more expensive than WooCommerce, because Magento is simply more complex in design and therefore the developers are more expensive. This means that a store can cost €15,000 or more instead of €5,000. However, you get a reliable, high-performance system in return, which is tailored to e-commerce. So, compared to WooCommerce, you can say that with WooCommerce the server costs, maintenance costs by the developer, as well as the plugin costs are lower. So if you’re still starting out and price is a primary consideration, that would probably be your system of choice.
I think you could get a first impression of which store system is suitable for which target group. If you would like to get more advice, please make an appointment with the experts at eBakery.
