The tax zone and the tax rate

But now off to the backend. First of all, we need to distinguish between tax zone, tax rate, tax rule and product tax class Let’s start with the tax zone. This can be found in the left column under Stores > Taxes and Tax Zones and Rates. Here we find the tax zone and the tax rate. The tax zone is the geographical area of application for the respective tax rate. We now create a new tax rate once, which we call “Germany 19%”. The tax zone is therefore Germany. Just add the state you want to refer to and the corresponding postal code. Even if this will not differ within Germany. Do not forget to save at the end.

Create the control rule in Magento

Thus, we have created a new tax rate for the respective tax zone. Step 2 would now be to create a control rule. For this we also go to Stores again and this time to Tax Rules. We create a new one called “Germany”, select our just created tax rate and now when we click on “Additional Settings” we can select our related customer and product tax class. Save again at the end. However, an established tax rule is of no use to us if it is not integrated in practice. That is why we now have to select them once in a product. So off you go into any product. Here we now have to select the appropriate product tax class to which we have assigned our newly created tax rate. Save at the end and your changed tax rate should take effect.

Magento tax rate change - Practical use

Change Magento tax rate - Advanced tax settings

How the new tax rate is applied to product prices, shipping costs and discounts and on which page areas the newly generated prices should be displayed can be set under Stores->Configuration->Sales ->Tax. At the same time, you can also specify here whether catalog prices are displayed with or without taxes, and whether the tax calculation should be based on the unit price of a product or on the total price of the quantity of ordered products.
