Configure PrestaShop product settings

Global item settings for your PrestaShop

How to configure PrestaShop product settings and thus make global changes to your items themselves, item pages and stock options is what you will learn in this PrestaShop Screencast Tutorial.

There you will find the PrestaShop product settings

Before we create our first item in our PrestaShop in the next episode, let’s take a look at the general product settings and configure them. You can find them in the store backend, in the left column under store settings and articles. As you can see there, the item settings are also divided into the settings that apply to the items themselves, the item page, the stock options and the display options.

Configure PrestaShop product settings : The item settings

For the articles themselves, for example. using the catalog mode to disable all purchase options. This also deactivates the display of prices. In addition, you can specify how long after the publication of the article should be displayed as new. Accordingly, the specified number is calculated in “days”. The maximum character length for the short descriptions can be defined and the basis on which the quantity discounts are to be calculated can be specified. So based on the articles or the variants. The next setting should be left at No by default, otherwise the url can be changed. So if you are not familiar with generating user friendly URL’s and don’t want to enable them for a reason, please leave it at no. The last article setting determines whether you have to publish an article explicitly first or whether it should be visible directly.

Configure the item page of your PrestaShop in the product settings

Available quantities can be visualized on the item pages, but they don’t have to be, which you can set with the first switch. If you want to hide items with a stock of 0 from the beginning, set the corresponding switch to No. From a sales psychology point of view, it sometimes makes sense to communicate to the customer that only a small quantity is still available. For this purpose, a certain value can be entered here, from which the remaining quantity is displayed if the stock level falls below this value. If you want to use the “Add to basket” button in the list view leave this switch set to Yes. If you set this field to No, the customer will have to visit the product detail page to order the product. If you use volume discounts, the display of discounted prices may come into play, which you can activate herewith.

Customize "Item Stock" settings

Very important, however, is the setting whether a customer can order an article if it is Out Of Stock. The switch for Enable Inventory Management should always remain set to Yes, as this will reduce the item quantities from PrestaShop can be customized. They are lowered when a purchase is made and increased should an item be canceled. This can or should only be deactivated for virtual articles.

PrestaShop configure product settings for storage and display options

In the further course, it is about the delivery times for in-stock and out-of-stock items that can and should be entered here. Lastly, we have the setting of how to handle bundle items. Whether to decrease the bundle, only the items in the bundle, or both, after a purchase. At the very bottom you can specify how many articles should be displayed per page, which sorting parameter should be used in the article list and whether these articles should be sorted by this parameter in ascending or descending order.

So much for the basic settings that apply to all items in your store. In the next episode, I’ll show you how to create your first article yourself.
