Delete Instagram account - Here's how

Permanently deleting an account does not work at the moment, neither via the app nor via the help section of the Instagram website. In the past this was not a problem, but after a certain point lately you always encounter the error message: “The requested page could not be found”. So far, this issue has not been fixed by Instagram. Fortunately, there is also a detour, which we want to show you in this blog article.

Why delete your Instagram account?

Although Instagram is attracting more and more users from all over the world and the Reel feature is even competing with TikTok, more and more voices are being raised emphasizing the dangers of social media and addictive technologies, deleting their online presence and recommending this step to the public as well. Individualized algorithms and the constant optimization of stimuli tie you more and more to your smartphone and contribute to the fact that your behavior corresponds less to your ideas than to the ideas of “Meta” (formerly Facebook).

Although conventional advertising is present in a much greater quantity than before, with Instagram’s reels and algorithms, one can no longer speak of it: Critics see in them an attempt at comprehensive programming of the consumer and a kind of hypnosis and behavior control of the individual. The dopamine kicks that bring us likes and followers are pure calculation and have been incorporated into the design of Facebook and Instagram: It’s no coincidence that the design of the user interface was inspired by slot machines and other gambling paraphernalia and benefits from them.

Reason enough to give up Instagram?

It is the nature of social media to reward lurid and insubstantial content and to fuel controversy. Instagram is also predestined to emphasize and take advantage of certain negative aspects of our nature: Time is the currency of the 21st century, and tech companies are doing their best to take as much of it from you as possible. To this end, the design ethicist Tristan Harris put forward the thesis of “human downgrading,” which stands in stark contrast to all utopian and technocratic ideas of the future and states that computers are changing our lives for the worse.

“Refreshing has the same function as the lever on a slot machine: You get a tempting prize, or ‘nothing,'” Harris summarizes casually. Experts like him have recently taken Instagram’s parent company Meta to task for keeping an internal study on Instagram’s harmfulness under wraps and deliberately distorting the facts: According to a leaked document, the group’s management has admitted to negatively affecting the self-image of one in three girls and being linked to six percent of all cases of self-harm. However, the facts and figures are interpreted differently by Meta and the Instagram team.

The answer from Instagram

In his widely acclaimed speech to the U.S. Congress, Mark Zuckerberg emphasized the harmlessness and positive aspects of Facebook and Instagram technologies. The fact that over 22 million young people use Instagram, and the majority of those surveyed reportedly feel happier as well as more connected to their surroundings thanks to the technologies provided by his company, is reason enough for him to think about an Instagram spin-off for kids.

Instead of exposing young people to dangerous algorithms and adult content, he said, we need to acknowledge the reality that children and young people like to use social media and make appropriate content and platforms available to them. Whistleblowers such as Edward Snowden and Frances Haugen see this as an attempt to lull the public into a sense of security, and to leverage the accusations in a kind of verbal aikido.

Facebook's restructuring and what it means for Instagram

By creating the new umbrella brand Meta, the focus of the company, what was previously known as Facebook, is on the creation of virtual reality technology: the negative connotation that established platforms such as Facebook or Instagram have received from their criticism is wiped aside because they are to play only a secondary role for the group’s management. The restructuring makes Instagram more independent of the “mothership” and in the eyes of many analysts, less of a concern. Ultimately, it’s up to you whether you want to keep your account or not: everyone else should finish reading this article.

But the first thing we’ll go into is deactivation. At the moment, to deactivate your account, you have to proceed via the Instagram page in the browser.
Open Instagram and log in to the profile you want to delete. Then open the settings and scroll down under the Edit Profile section, where you will find the button “Temporarily deactivate my account”.
Once you have clicked on the option, you will need to select a reason why you want to deactivate your account. Instagram would like to offer you suggested solutions for this, which you don’t have to accept. Next, enter your password and click Temporarily deactivate account at the bottom. Here you can see once again what deactivation means. Namely, your profile, comments and likes will be hidden until you log back in. Currently, to delete your account for good, you don’t have to go to the help section of the Instagram page in the browser like you usually do, but click on this link.

With the solution it works and you can delete your Instagram account

Before doing so, log in to your account via the browser that you want to delete and click on the link afterwards. Verifies that the correct account has been selected, in which case we have created a test account for it.
Select a reason why you want to delete the account. Again, Instagram will offer you suggested solutions that you can ignore.
