The term electronic data processing, or EDP for short, refers to the processing of data using electrical devices such as a computer. The term can also be used to describe the use of a computer and the associated programs.

In this video, we take a look at what exactly EDP means and how it differs from IT:

EDP includes the following aspects

  • The data acquisition usually via a keyboard
  • The processing of data by software and algorithms
  • Data output for example by a screen or a printout

Electronic data processing is based on the so-called EVA principle: input, processing and output. Nowadays, the processing of data is no longer limited to a computer, but to any device that can process it, such as a smartwatch or smartphone.

The broader concept of data

Data refers to all signals that are sent back and forth to represent, change or store information. Data processing can be writing a document, accessing a web page, or it can mean spreadsheet programs like Excel or image editing programs like Photoshop.

Difference to IT

Everyone who deals with computers comes into contact with the topics IT and EDP. Sometimes the two terms are even used as synonyms, because IT is the abbreviation for information technology and includes all areas related to data processing, such as hardware, software, networks, telecommunications, and so on. So it is not so easy to separate the two terms. However, it can be said that EDP is a part of IT. EDP deals mainly with software and IT with a whole variety of areas and applications.
