But first of all, let’s explain what TikTok Shop is, what makes it different, for example. to Amazon, which products are currently selling particularly well and in what form you can advertise products on TikTok. In this episode, we cover a store system that most viewers probably won’t have on their radar yet. Nevertheless, it is precisely here that millions are currently being made in sales of banal items such as pickle sweatshirts, elastic shoelaces or beer thorns to open cans. In this article you will find out how this works and whether you as a German retailer can also profit from it. But now let’s get back to our actual topic and call a spade a spade – the up-and-coming store system that this video will be about is TikTok Shop. Yes, you heard right. A dedicated store within the social media short video platform. How the whole thing can look, we see here. Within the video that introduces the product, you can set up a shortcut that will take you directly to it. So no redirection to a store, no, the product can be purchased directly here in TikTok, which brings enormous potential.
But why is the TikTok store so attractive for both sides, i.e. both the online retailer and the customer. On the dealer side, the comparatively low commission rate comes into play. For example, Amazon charges between 8% and 15% depending on the category, but TikTok charges 5% or less. In addition, TikTok offers enough opportunities to gain visibility even without paid ads. At Amazon, almost nothing works without paid advertising. This in turn leads us to the question – Where can products be integrated within TikTok. There are exactly 3 options here. In livestreams, in videos and as shopping tabs within your own profile. But of course you are free to place additional advertisements here as well.
And how far do customers benefit, or what is different about TikTok compared to other store systems and marketplaces?
One big difference that has also lifted TikTok from YouTube, Instagram and the like is arbitrariness. So that the algorithm chooses for you what is displayed to you. Of course, this is now also true of YouTube shorts and Insta Reels, but the pioneer here was clearly TikTok. Of course, retailers can take advantage of this fact to create a need for a product that you didn’t even know existed before. To better understand what is meant, we present you 3 of the most hyped articles on TikTok right now.
However, our point is that potential customers do not actively search for a product as they would on Amazon, but are virtually surprised by it on their For You Page. That means you have a completely different approach to the customer, which in turn explains how such a Pickel Jar sweatshirt sells over 23,000 copies. Several factors came into play here, one being that TikTok pushes new features like the store function very much, but also that Bad Addition Botique, which is behind the shirt, relied on TikTok’s affiliate function early on and thus videos with the shirt also went viral with other creators. Another curiosity is the so-called Krakin, a plastic spike that you can hang on your keychain, which in turn makes it possible to pierce beer cans without injury, which is especially popular at U.S. universities to be able to quickly drink a beer can. On TikTok alone, it sold over 38,000 copies.
Also a top-selling alcohol gadget is the Take Shots straw. This can be filled with liquor, then held in a juice or soft drink glass and is said to greatly reduce the taste of alcohol when drinking. This product, on the other hand, is said to have sold more than 13,000 units.
So what can we take from all this?
TikTok Shop offers great potential to inspire and appeal to the younger target group in particular. You can see this in the type of products that are successful: Motto shirts, alcohol gadgets and the like. What is also clear, however, is that individual products manage to be sold to men and women without an established brand behind them. For example, the first product is a couple selling out of their basement. Whether that’s the path to long-term success is open to question, but not considering TikTok Shop as one of its sales channels could be negligent. Especially since this can be connected to the Shopify store and the already existing catalog can be provided simply with one click.
However, one hurdle that German retailers still face is the lack of availability. If we want to open a new TikTok store, so far we only have 7 Asian countries, UK in Europe and USA in North America.
