This is an instruction that describes to the search engine on which URL the original page is located. Since search engines rank pages with repeated content lower, the Canonical Tag is used to correctly mark up web pages with duplicate content. This is inserted via a <link> element in the <head> area of a bottom page. So you link from one or more copies of a page to the original. By the way, the original page is also called the canonical page.

Concrete application examples

The Canonical is used, for example, in online stores whose products can be sorted by color and price. Often stores get quite a lot of duplicate content as a result. Blogs often have the same problem, for example, when the same content can be found several times under different categories. To avoid devaluations by search engines, the canonical tag is used.

Another use case is when a web page is accessible via different URLs or protocols. Examples would be: www.ebakery.de, ebakery.com only or www.ebakery.de/index.html.

Other uses for the Canonical tag include when the content of the web page is displayed in different views, such as a print version or as a PDF. When content is also published on other external websites or even when creating standalone mobile websites, such as m.ebakery.com.

To make the best use of the Canonical tag, you must first identify all pages that have the same content. In the next step, you set one of these pages as the original and add the Canonical tag to the remaining pages. If you don’t or if a canonical tag is missing, then the search engines will assume that the page is an original.

More solutions for duplicate content avoidance

Of course, there are other solutions to avoid duplicate content. The Canonical tag is just one possible way. For example, it also works when exact duplicates are taken offline and redirected to the original with a 301 redirect.
