But now to the categories.

What is a category?

For the e-commerce newbies, a brief explanation of what categories are and what you need them for. Basically, categories give your store and the items in it a framework and structure. This means that your store will be divided into different categories, such as e.g.. Men’s shoes, women’s shoes, children’s shoes divided and then as we can see here is included in our navigation. This means that if a customer is only looking for “men’s shoes”, then he does not have to click through thousands of women’s shoes, but in the best case goes to the tab “men’s shoes” and finds subcategories, such as “men’s shoes”. “Sneakers.

Create OXID eShop category - The category management

But for this article, let’s first take on the task of creating a new category. We do the whole thing in our store backend. You can get to it by entering your store URL and adding /admin at the end. After entering your username and password, you should find exactly this window as in our video. Since our categories are part of the article management, the menu for them is also located under “Manage articles” and “Categories”. The category management is divided into two parts. The upper half shows you the already existing categories and the lower half the mask for creating a new category. That means here we are exactly right.

Create a new one

Let’s take the example from before and create a category for men’s shoes. First, however, it must be determined whether this is to be switched active from the outset. That means she would be in your live store.
If the checkmark was not set here, the category would be present in the database but not visible in the store. What would be possible, however, is to make a category active but hide it. Then you can group it for specific assignments, but it would not be visible in the store. But we will come to that in one of the next episodes. Then, of course, the title must be entered. So with us “men’s shoes”.

Create OXID eShop category - The master data

If we want to assign this category to another already existing category, we could say that the new category “Men’s shoes” is a subcategory of the main category “Shoes”. However, this does not exist, so we will leave it out. The sorting is there to give this a ranking. You can already see the numbers in the existing categories. The smaller the number, the higher it will be displayed. Let’s go to the frontend right now to take a look at what exactly the category image is. Here we see an image above the category name, which should visualize the content of this category. If we go into another category, we see that there is no image there. So it’s up to you how you want your category to look.

For each category a separate template possible

By the way, any of your media content, be it images, videos or graphics can have an impact on the PageSpeed of your stores. That’s why it’s best to take a look at our Oxid eShop SEO blog to know what’s important.
The icon is used to display the category as a subcategory in the category view. If you want to promote your category on the home page, a special image can be inserted here for this purpose as well. You can choose a separate template for each category. The template determines the look and arrangement of the content, so to speak. For this purpose, the respective file path is entered here. An example would be this: /application/views/flow/tpl/page/list

Create OXID eShop Category - More Customization Options

If you want to create a price-bound category, you could also specify a price range for which only those items that fall within that price range will be displayed. Also special is the next field, for separate VAT rates. Negative discounts such as rebates can also be disabled for an entire category. If you then save the whole thing, you can also fill the other tabs. Do you want e.g. inform your site visitors in more detail about what can be found in this category, then you can use the long text for this purpose. We will use a fictitious text for this purpose. We do not want to add any more pictures. At the place you could then sort your articles within the category. In Oxid, the URL is automatically generated by the title. Thus, the SEO URL would then also change if you were to change the name of the categories. If you don’t want that, you can fix the URL with the hook. At the end, the respective Meta Title and Meta Description can be determined for this category. How these have to look like, you can see in our OXID SEO video.

The OXID eShop Agency
