Instagram Sensitive Content Control

The reason for less reach on Instagram?

In this video, we show you what the Instagram feature“Sensitive Content Control” is all about. On the one hand, it is supposed to make Instagram safer, on the other hand, influencers complain about loss of reach. What does the feature do? We uncover.

Instagram Sensitive Content Control - What the Instagram CEO says about it

Already a few weeks ago, the Head of Instagram announced that a new feature is coming soon. The Sensitive Content Control, a feature designed to provide more security on the Explore Page. This feature will change how we see content on Instagram. However, many creators have received a sharp drop in engagement as a result of this feature. Also, with this feature, many users no longer see the content of accounts they have interacted with a lot.

Instagram Sensitive Content Control - What's Behind It?

Let’s take a closer look at the feature: As you’ve probably heard from other videos of ours, your account needs a certain trust level in order for Instagram to put your content on the Explore Page. Users who frequently violate the Community Guidelines are not recommended by Instagram. In a video, the Head of Instagram explains that in doing so, they have always had a great responsibility to users and do not support content that promotes depression and self-destruction, for example, in its distribution. However, a user can follow such an account and the videos will also be shown to him in the feed, but not recommended by Instagram via the Explore Page. Now that is also changing. With the new Sensitive Content Control feature, users now have the choice of what they want to see on the Explore Page. You can now choose how Family Friendly the content on the Explore Page should be. A user who is interested in boxing and extreme sports can now choose whether this type of content should also be found on the Explore Page.

Instagram Sensitive Content Control - There you will find the feature

With this feature, Instagram wants to give every user the opportunity to set more precisely which posts they are interested in. You can find the new feature by going to your account and tapping Menu. Now press Account and then Sensitive Content Settings. You’ll also find this info again: We now give you more control over the photos and videos you see on your Discover page. With this setting you can restrict content that you find disturbing or offensive.

You can now leave the settings selected as before, add even more restrictions or even less.

This seemingly small feature is causing some creators to have visibility issues at the moment. This is because creators who seem to be a bit closer to Instagram NoGos like nudity, violence or critical political topics than other users have also been restricted. These NoGos have reportedly included fitness bloggers, models, or athletes who suddenly realized that their content was no longer being pushed on the Explore Page. Only when their followers selected Allow again in the settings, they saw the content again.

An example of the effects

Even though Instagram writes that this feature is only for the Explore Page, we can assume that they also use this information for ranking in the feed and Stories. Fitness coach James Smith, for example, shared a message in a Q and A from a follower who reported that there were no posts from the fitness coach in his feed since the new feature was introduced. If you notice this problem, then we have two solutions for you.

These are our tips

1.share it in the story with your followers. For example, if you are active in the fitness niche, tell them that Instagram might rank you under health promises or nudity. If your followers allow sensitive content, they will see your content again.
2. inform your followers through other channels where you are active, such as TikTok, Twitter, Facebook or YouTube. Tell them they will see your content again if they allow sensitive content.
