How to create newsletters for Messenger

In this WhatsApp newsletter marketing tutorial, we will show you step by step how to create a newsletter campaign for messengers like WhatsApp. We use ChatWerk as an implementation tool. This means that all common messengers can be managed in one app and newsletters can be created and delivered for several platforms with just one piece of work.

WhatsApp newsletter marketing - the requirements

As already mentioned, we need a WhatsApp Business account and ChatWerk as a basis. ChatWerk can be used free of charge for 14 days. You must then have booked at least the Premium Plan. Otherwise you can also choose a cheaper plan and book the newsletter feature as an add-on. Once you have connected WhatsApp Business and ChatWerk, your ChatWerk backend should look like ours.

The ChatWerk menu

Here you can view and check all incoming messages. All settings can be configured in the second menu item. So the company information, new text templates can be created, the messenger channels can be managed and the QR code can be downloaded at this point. You can create new employees, give them restricted rights or admin rights and download chat histories. Your contacts can then be managed here in the last menu item. So you can, for example invite a new contact. Simply creating it is not possible, most likely for GDPR reasons. This means that if you invite a new contact, they must agree to the invitation, which is known as an opt-in. However, he also has the option to refuse.

WhatsApp newsletter marketing - The contact list

Within the contact list you can see the name, on which messenger this person is active, whether this person has approved marketing campaigns and which labels have been assigned to them. The labels are very important at this point. These are then used, for example, to create We also put together specific target groups that we need for our newsletter. A label can therefore, for example “Existing customer”. Or this customer can be assigned to a specific employee. Or an “opt-in” label can be assigned so that only these customers are selected for marketing campaigns. Structured organization is therefore very important right from the start.

WhatsApp newsletter marketing - how to create them

Our menu item for today’s video is the third – interactions. This also includes the Campaign Manager. If you have already created campaigns, you will see the following parameters. Recipients means the number of people to whom the campaign was delivered. If everyone opened the newsletter, the open rate would be 100%. This means that it shows the percentage of all recipients who have opened the campaign. There is always a CTA, or call to action, within the campaign. This can be a link to your appointment tool, this can be a link to your store to apply the discount code, in any case a call to action. You can see how many of these recipients clicked on the button based on the conversion rate. Otherwise, you will only see the current status of the campaign: is it currently active, has it only been created as a draft or has it already been completed.

Create new campaign

To create a new one, click on “New Campaigne”. The first thing we do is give our campaign a name. We then select the desired language. This is followed by the campaign content. This can be just a text, an image or a file. However, this should not exceed 20Mb. If you only select text, a header text field is activated. The good thing about ChatWerk is that everything you change is displayed directly as a preview. Incidentally, one thing is always fixed within the newsletter and cannot be changed for legal reasons, namely the footer. This allows you to unsubscribe from the newsletter. To insert another button, activate this toggle switch. Then you have to enter a CTA, which is then displayed as a button label.
Ex. “Use discount code”. Then it would be useful if you could use the product detail page of the discounted product as a link. is used.

Campaign successfully created and submitted

Now you can select which messenger this campaign should apply to. We want to issue the campaign as a push newsletter, so we select the corresponding field. You can then select a start date. Finally, we come to the target group. As you probably have customers in your contact list who have not consented to the opt-in, you should not select “All contacts” for this. Instead, you select a label, such as “Opt-In Campaign”. This is then used to create a target group with only contacts who have been assigned the “Opt-in campaign” label. At the end you can see how many people this target group comprises. Just save at the end. If you were to click on “Submit” now, this campaign would be delivered at the appropriate time. You have then successfully created and activated your WhatsApp newsletter campaign.
