New innovations offer new opportunities – so it was with Instagram, TikTok, the YouTube shorts and now maybe WhatsApp?
At the very least, you should not disregard the current innovation and find out if this could be a new option as an online retailer to reach its customers. We are talking about the WhatsApp channels. How you can easily create one yourself, what it is and what it brings to you and your customers, you will learn in this episode.
What are these new WhatsApp channels?
Anyone who opens WhatsApp on their smartphone after the latest update will most likely find this new sign. These are the WhatsApp channels or “channels”. WhatsApp itself says about this that they are using it to create a The channels are separate from your chats, and the people you follow are not visible to other subscribers. We also protect the personal data of administrators and followers.”
So that means channels are very clearly different from WhatsApp groups. To demonstrate this a little better, let’s go to one of the biggest channels to date, Real Madrid. First of all, we see how many people have subscribed to the channel so far. Within the channel we see both images and video posts. So far, you can only interact with 6 different emojis. So we see how many people have interacted with each of the emojis shown here, but not who that was, so no profile pictures, numbers or anything like that. We can’t write comments either, we can only consume the content on this channel and interact as just described. The channel owner can enter a channel description and add a logo or pictures. This should then also make it clear how channels differ from groups.
But how do you create a WhatsApp channel yourself?
For this you have to go to Updates or “News”. Then click on the gray cross next to Channel and choose between Find Channels and Create Channel. We want to click on “Create Channel”, of course. If you don’t see this yet, you’ll have to wait a few more days. WhatsApp is gradually rolling out the feature. Afterwards you have to click on “Continue”, i.e. the green button, and there you can enter the display image, the name and the description, as we have just seen with Real Madrid. At the end, just click on Create Channel and you can use it from now on.
But how, is now probably the question. Diligent viewers of our channel will know that we rely on a multichannel approach to both online commerce and marketing, and advise our customers to do the same. This means that as an online retailer without an established brand, simply opening a WhatsApp channel now won’t do any good. But one strategy approach would be to publish corporate videos, product videos, possibly stock vlogs, etc. on YouTube to build reach there. What you could do then is point to the WhatsApp channel within the videos and advertise that there will either be exclusive content there like blog articles or discount codes. Within the WhatsApp channel you can post video trailers with YouTube links, link blogs and upload discount codes as images. So you manage to direct from WhatsApp to your store as well as YouTube, but also from YouTube to WhatsApp, with which both channels will continue to grow. So what can be said in summary? WhatsApp channels are a brand new broadcast feature that plays right into the hands of you online retailers. In addition, every new feature offers incredible potential, especially at the beginning. So you should not wait too long to have the time advantage on your side. WhatsApp alone is not enough, but in conjunction with other marketing channels and mechanisms, it will become a very powerful tool. Or what do you think?
