YouTube Content Claim

Copyright claim vs. copyright infringement

What is the YouTube Content ID and what is a YouTube Content Claim? Let’s say this much in advance, that this is about copyright. We clarify what the difference is between a copyright claim and a copyright infringement. All this in this YouTube tutorial.

YouTube Content Claim - What is it?

Content Claim is English and means copyright claim. The definition of it is the following “Copyright protects the author through the author’s personal right and through the assignment of property rights of exploitation in his intellectual, personal and property relations to his work.” Copyright is therefore intended to protect artists by giving them rights over when and how their works may be used.

The YouTube Content ID System

Now let’s take a look at Content ID: Content ID is the name of a system on YouTube that checks content for matching content such as audio and video. It is used by content creators to protect their content. When a YouTube video is uploaded to the platform, it is scanned using the content ID and checked for matches. If the case occurs that a video creator uploads a video by matching another registered video, the creator who reused the content will receive a content claim. The actual creator of the registered content can now take the following actions.

Possibilities of the owner after a violation

Remove copyright claim: In this case, the copyright holder leaves his work to the Video Creator.
Monitor: Here the creator gets insights into the video statistics of the video in which the work was used.
Monetization: If the creator chooses this option, he will receive the advertising revenue generated by the video.
Mute: If an audio track was used, the creator of the track can mute it for the video.
Block: In this option, the video will be blocked by the content creator, making it non-public.

YouTube content claim does not equal infringement

Copyright claim, in English content claim is not the same as copyright infringement. In the case of a content claim, the author is simply informed that his registered work has been discovered in another video and that he must now decide what action to take. So it’s just a notification that the Content ID System, has detected content on YouTube that has already been registered in the database. If there is a content claim in your video, do the following:
In general, you can appeal if it is not legal. If you have purchased licenses for music or stock videos, for example, you can submit them. To do this, go to the Video Manager next to the video and click Appeal. You can choose the License option. Then copy the contents of your license agreement into the Foundations field. On YouTube, it usually takes between 24 and 96 hours for an appeal to be processed.
