Clubhouse review

Where does the hype come from and why is clubhouse privacy questionable ?

Clubhouse Criticism – Why Clubhouse privacy is a criticism of the mega-hype social media app Clubhouse, where the hype comes from in the first place, and what our opinion is on it, you can see in this Clubhouse tutorial.

Criticism / Opinion / Hype / Conclusion about the Clubhouse App

After we have dealt with what Clubhouse actually is, how to get access to the app and which functions it has in the previous episodes, we want to draw a conclusion and in the course of this also take a look at whether there are any points of criticism that need to be discussed.

Clubhouse vs. TikTok vs. Instagram vs. Facebook

The bottom line is that this new social media app is right in line with the zeitgeist, and thus rightly hype. Contrary to the ever accelerating platforms from Facebook, to Instagram, to now TikTok, it was only a matter of time before this construct was reversed. In TikTok, the goal is to make your content as entertaining as possible in 15 seconds, with the first 3 seconds being the most crucial in determining whether the viewer is caught or swiped on directly. Clubhouse is about engaging with a topic over time, listening to other opinions, understanding them, and letting a discussion develop from there. That is, this app decelerates the previously prevailing principle.

Where does the hype come from?

To that end, this social media app is actually social. You walk into a room and know the people in it actually want to talk, as is usually the case at parties. Especially in the current lockdown period, when parties in the conventional sense are not allowed, this form of social interaction and exchange of opinions, could fill this gap. What further reinforces this interaction character is the live character. In previous years, successful live apps like Discord or Twitch have proven that this form of interaction with one’s idol is very, very well received. Moreover, in conclusion, we can simply talk about a very effective marketing concept, which, of course, contributed to the popularity and hype. Exclusivity is the keyword here. Only iPhone users can use this app and only if they have received an invitation and consume the content only in the live moment.

Exclusivity is written in capital letters in the Clubhouse

The last point is made even clearer by the fact that you get a warning message as soon as you activate the screen capture function and are in a chat room. It is not desired by operators to share content from conversations on on-demand platforms. The exclusivity claim should be preserved, which has the effect that those who are not part of the clubhouse feel the urge to want to participate.

It all sounds very exciting and positive, but are there any criticisms?

Clubhouse Criticism - The Privacy

They do indeed exist. Probably the biggest accusation concerns the disregard for data protection.
Anyone who wants to use the app is asked to register with their real name and phone number. The app also requests access to the user’s own contact list, including names, phone numbers and all other information stored there. If you do not release the data, you will not be able to invite other people. Conversely, anyone who receives an invitation also knows that the app itself has already received the data from one of their own contacts. GDPR therefore technically at least questionable. In addition, the app of course meets the current zeitgeist, as already explained. But what if the lockdown is over, people are no longer at home and have less time to use the app. And the topic of “time” plays an important role, as I said. Because just checking the latest Stories, like on Instagram, is not a given at Clubhouse.

Our opinion of the new social media app Clubhouse

Where this new social media app will go, no one can predict. We find the app to be functionally very clean and easy to understand, and despite its exclusivity, it enjoys rapidly increasing user numbers. That is, those who invest time now and open their own club may be able to benefit financially in a few months through monitarization opportunities. Whether the app will then comply with the GDPR standard in that time, however, cannot be guaranteed.
