Instagram Swipe-Up Link - Soon to be gone?

Instagram wants to replace the popular Swipe Up feature. After a test phase in June, Instagram is now finally switching over the important Story function. The Swipe Up feature is especially popular for redirecting users from the app to a web page. Influencers and businesses use it for discount codes, online stores, and newsletter signups. Now Instagram is planning to replace this feature. Back in June 2021, Instagram started to change the Stories and Story features. Previously, only Instagram accounts that have more than 10,000 subscribers could use the Swipe Up feature in their Stories. But now it should also be possible for selected profiles that have less than 10,000 subscribers. In June, Instagram also enabled accounts with fewer subscribers for the new feature during the test phase. During the test phase, the popular high wipe was replaced by a sticker.

Sticker instead of traditional swipe-up feature

With this, Instagram wanted to find out if a sticker is clicked more often than a swipe up is used. Apparently, this theory has been confirmed, which is why the sticker is supposed to replace the old function. Apart from the swipe up and click, however, there is another difference. The stickers are meant to give users more opportunities to interact. The swipe-up function could not be responded to via emojis or direct message until now. These reactions should be possible with the new sticker. The former Head of Product at Instagram explained the decision to go with stickers by saying that stickers would simply be a better fit for the platform and the way it is used.

Changes from 30.08.2021

Since the testing phase was successful, Instagram will discontinue the swipe up feature from August 30, 2021 and switch to Sticker. Despite the test phase, in which even smaller accounts could use the feature, the old rules will apply for now. That is, to use the new sticker in Stories, users must have more than 10,000 followers. However, this is not yet a final decision. It may well happen in the future that other accounts also get the sticker. However, this will only become clear through various test phases.
