TikTok has caused quite a stir here in Germany, especially this year. No other app allows users to go viral or become successful as quickly as TikTok. The app recorded many new users from Germany and especially this year. TikTok became a very serious competitor to Instagram and reshuffled the cards in the social media world. Especially the competition with Instagram is a point we should take a closer look at. In fact, TikTok has managed to make the biggest platforms like YouTube and Instagram rethink their strategies on reach, visibility and their algorithm.
Many social media users have found how difficult it is to still generate views and visibility on YouTube or Instagram during this time. The days of creating an account, posting regularly and being successful seemed to be over. Many blog posts and videos have been made on this topic in recent years. But TikTok brought those times back. The platform gave users the opportunity to be seen through their algorithm. Organic growth was possible again. TikTok stands for the fact that anyone can be successful with them. The German CEO himself had said in an interview: “On TikTok, it is possible to start an account today and have millions of views and many new followers tomorrow. This special feature is part of the success of the still young app. Users here became influencers or famous TikTokers virtually overnight. This is precisely why Instagram and YouTube are coming under increasing pressure.
Both companies introduced a copy of TikTok on their platforms: Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts. In addition, the algorithm on Instagram was also adjusted and is still being revised. Instagram has followed suit the most, officially announcing that it is no longer a photo-sharing app, but wants to focus on videos. A change that was triggered by TikTok. So TikTok not only enables us to get reach in the app itself, but also ensures that the competition follows suit.Is it still worthwhile to launch with TikTok in the summer of 2021? Here we give a resounding yes!
TikTok now has around 800 million users worldwide and over 2 billion downloads of the app. 62 percent of users are between the ages of 10 and 29, and this is where it gets interesting, because the days of TikTok being a teen app are already over. Meanwhile, 38% of users are older than 30 and the trend is increasing. So TikTok is no longer mainly for teens. By the way, it was similar with Facebook many years ago. The network started with young users and after some time many older users joined. The younger ones then switched to Instagram. On Instagram, the process was similar again and users are switching to TikTok at the moment. For TikTok, this means that the more time goes by, the more older users will follow suit. Because TikTok’s success is far from over.
So it’s still very worthwhile for you to get started with the app, as its full potential is far from exhausted. By the way, no other app currently has as many active users, i.e. users who actively produce content themselves, as TikTok. A billion videos are shared on the app every day, although the focus of the content has long since shifted from dance to entertainment and comedy. Our conclusion is: TikTok is no longer a teen app that we should smile at. It has become Instagram’s biggest competitor and is taken very seriously by them. Therefore, we should also take them very seriously.
