Instagram vs. TikTok for business – The comparison of the two most popular social media platforms. We examine the target audience, as well as the influencer marketing and affilliate marketing opportunities of both platforms. Who has the nose in front? TikTok or Instagram? The answer is in the video or blog.
TikTok is becoming more and more of a competitor to Instagram. The app was the most downloaded in 2020 and still no app is currently downloaded more. Moreover, hardly any other platform registers as many active users as TikTok. The app gets Instagram to provide new features like Reels and Rooms for users so they don’t switch to TikTok entirely. But which app is more important for businesses today? On which app should you be active with your business? We will answer these questions in the following three comparisons.
Instagram has a variety of niches and therefore a variety of different users in different age groups. Almost everything is represented here. So the possibilities to advertise here are also quite extensive. Compared to Instagram, TikTok is especially popular among younger users. The majority of users here are between 14 and 30 years old. In the U.S., 60 percent of users are between the ages of 16 and 24, and 24 percent of users are between the ages of 24 and 40. Right now, Instagram has even more to offer in terms of audience and diversity of users. But that may soon change. Past experience has shown that every new network has succeeded with younger people first, before other age groups have followed suit. That was already the case with Facebook and Instagram. Experts predict that by the end of 2021, TikTok will have more users than Instagram. So the app still has great potential. You should closely monitor at what point your target audience is more active on TikTok or if they already are. For a young target group, TikTok is definitely more interesting at the moment.
The second point is influencer marketing: As far as influencer marketing is concerned, Instagram is still the preferred channel for companies. Hardly any platform is as designed for influencer marketing as Instagram. The functions of the app give the optimal possibilities to advertise. Here, a product can be presented in stories and a swipe-up function can be used to go directly to the article. Features such as the Bio Link and Direct Messages, which make it easier to connect with your target audience, are also particularly popular with businesses. As far as influencer marketing is concerned, TikTok has not yet reached Instagram’s standard at this point. But here, too, the trend shows that TikTok is on the rise, because here, too, the share of influencers is growing strongly. So it remains to be seen what features the app will add to further facilitate influencer marketing.
For the third point, let’s look at affiliate marketing and products. Once again, Instagram has a clear advantage. On the one hand, the app offers the integrated store function, which makes it easier for companies to link products or sell directly via Instagram, and on the other hand, news and promotions can be announced in the Stories and questions can be responded to immediately via Direct Message. TikTok does not have these features yet. You can also send messages on TikTok, but to do so, the app’s users have to follow each other. The Direct Message function is particularly important for companies and self-employed persons for their business. Instagram offers an easy way to connect with customers directly. This makes it easy to respond to inquiries, complaints and other messages. Direct contact with the customer is therefore easier on Instagram compared to TikTok.
Our conclusion is: Even though TikTok is becoming more and more popular, Instagram is still interesting for companies because of the functions it offers. The easy ways to link to products or get in touch directly via message continues to make Instagram extremely important for businesses and independents. But since TikTok is still relatively young and growing, you should keep an eye on what features will be added in the future and whether your target audience might be more active on TikTok or will be in the future. The trend shows that TikTok will continue to grow and overtake Instagram in terms of active users.
