Create Jimdo website

How to create a website for beginners

In this Jimdo tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a Jimdo website to get you started in 2021. This guide to creating a website is intended for beginners, which is why we will go through the registration and setup process with you step by step.

Create Jimdo Website - Here's how

Since our content management system video was so well received by you, we’ll devote a little longer to the topic and take a closer look at the individual systems. In today’s article, it’s Jimdo’s turn.
As a little fun fact beforehand: Jimdo is a German company, created and based in Hamburg. Since 2007, Jimdo’s website builder system has been improving steadily and, as we know from our comparison article, has some convincing features. If you missed our Content Management System Blog as well as our WordPress Versus TYPO3 and Wix vs. Jimdo articles so far, you can catch up here.

What is Jimdo?

One of the USPs that we have positively highlighted is hosting on Jimdo servers. That means you can start for free and immediately, get a Jimdo subdomain provided and can thus build your website or store. So you don’t have to worry about hosting at all.
And yes that’s right, Jimdo also offers the possibility to create a store. We take a look at the pricing models in advance this time. In a slimmed down form you could run your site completely free of charge. You also get the SSL certificate compliant with DSGVO, have 500MB of storage space and can even set up an online store with it. If you want to have your own domain and instead of 500Mb, you want to buy 5GB of storage, then you can pay 9€ per month. If you want to connect your existing domain, you have to pay the business tariff, but you have unlimited storage. You can find out which tariff is best for you on Jimdo’s price overview page and see which tariff is most likely to benefit you individually.

Create Jimdo website - The registration

Let’s take a look at how exactly you create your website with Jimdo.
Here we are on the Jimdo website and can directly press the blue button to start. First and foremost is the registration. You can either register with one of the three displayed profiles or enter an email address. We opted for the email, confirmed it and were then redirected to this page. Now we have to decide between the easy or complex variant. If at the words HTML and CSS, then choose the left variant.
Since we are only one person who just wants to start or test the whole thing, we select the left field and continue.

Create Jimdo Website - Jimdo Dolphin

Here you have to decide for what the website is intended. For us, this is just a hobby project that might turn into something more in the future. Now enter the name of your project here. We’re following up on our previous video series by naming our site after Sneakeria. Now we still have to define a goal. My goal is to promote the content. Our core theme is ultimately fashion. Here you can define your CI colors, in which the website will be designed. Finally, you need to determine which subpages you need. Do you need an “About Me” page to introduce yourselves? Then select this with. Then continue and we have the choice between two possibilities that have just been created for us by answering the questions. By the way, this is Jimdo Dolphin, which we had already mentioned earlier in the video.

First impression of the automatically created website

We decide to use the first template. If you are not sure, there is also the possibility to see a preview. And as you can see the site has been designed according to our wishes. A typical fashion layout, in the header only the pages we really need. Below you can present your products, have a slider for testimonials, a thumbnail with the link to the gallery and below in the footer the necessary imprint and privacy policy. By the way, here on the right side is the wizard that will help you with the setup. For SEO settings you need to upgrade your plan. Find out what SEO is and what to look for on Google to rank well in our Google Playlist.

The global design configurations

All the blocks we have just gone through serve only as placeholders, that is, they specify the layout. You could now go and choose another picture, which we will do one day. You can upload your own images or choose images from Jimdo’s stock library. The first thing you should clarify for yourself is whether you are happy with the font and color scheme. Since we have just selected the color scheme in Jimdo Dolphin, we will leave it at that. To change the font, go to Design and choose from several font sets. Furthermore, the general animations and the shape of the buttons can be customized. That is, here you can make golabel design settings.

If you want to change the content of your website now, just click on the already existing font and enter your desired textual content. If this is too many images for you and you would rather integrate a video, click on the play button icon and add e.g. a video. your YouTube link and the video is embedded.

Create Jimdo Website - The Pages Menu

Besides the design menu at the top, there is the page menu, with which you can change the arrangement in the header, add or delete pages. To fill this new page with content just click on “Add block” and you can choose if you want to add an image, image with text, slider, banner, video or anything else. You can then adjust these blocks as usual. If you are not satisfied with the selection, you can delete the block in the context menu and the layout block is gone again. So you can now go through page by page and customize it to your liking. If you want to go back to the backend of your website from the editor, you have to click on the profile.

The Jimdo Backend

Here you can make all settings and configurations that have nothing to do with the design of your site. This can include the domain, your SEO settings, your email redirects, the language of the system and so on.
Finally, it would be important to include your logo, which you can do by going to your profile at the top right and then inserting a logo here.
So you can then piece by piece without programming skills, build your website.
