TYPO3 Extension Tutorial - Extensions for your CMS

Now that you know from our comparison video when TYPO3 is suitable for you and furthermore how to get your TYPO3 site to the top of Google, we want to take a look at the case that something doesn’t fit in your TYPO3 CMS in this blog article. Because true to the motto “What doesn’t fit is made to fit”, TYPO3 also offers some extensions that raise the standard system to a new level. Therefore we explain you what TYPO3 Extensions are, how they work, so you can integrate them into your CMS and where you can find suitable extensions.
First of all, about the question – what are extensions?

What are TYPO3 Extensions?

Extensions are TYPO3 extensions that integrate a piece of functional code into your TYPO3 website. This then fulfills certain tasks that are missing in the standard TYPO3 system. These extensions are written in the PHP programming language and are mainly for simplification. For example your Instagram feed can be easily added to the website. As in the case of the Instagram feed, there are extensions that are also visible to the page visitor in the frontend, but there are also extensions that only access the backend. Ex. Compression tools for images to keep PageSpeed high or the Yoast SEO already mentioned in the last video, which shows you if you are doing SEO technically right or if not, what still needs to be improved. However, we will deal with this tool individually in another video.

TYPO3 Extension Tutorial - How do they work?

Now that it is clearer what TYPO3 extensions are, let’s turn to the question of how they work. But no functional analysis without extensions.
Therefore we show you in advance, where you can find TYPO3 Extensions. Most of them will probably be found centrally in TER – the TYPO3 Extension Repository. You can reach this under “extensions.typo3.org”. Otherwise, Google is a good place to start if you haven’t found what you’re looking for in TER.
So just write TYPO3 Extension and the name of the extension behind it.
But we found what we were looking for with Yoast SEO. Always make sure that your version is supported. If you don’t know which version you are using, you can look it up in the backend on the top left.

TYPO3 Extension Tutorial - Installation

To be able to install the zip file now, go to Extensions. Here you will see the already active ones. To upload a new one, click on the Upload icon and select the file you just downloaded, exactly as you received it. So do not unpack before. Now click Upload. You will get a feedback that your plugin has been successfully installed. Now, when you edit any page, you will see that something has been added to the SEO section and the Yoast SEO typical smiley symbolizes to you how well your page is optimized. A separate area for the extension has now also been set up in the sidebar. So you can easily extend your standard TYPO3 system.
