For active TikTok content creators, it’s going to be exciting this week, because the topic of live streaming, which had clearly dominated Twitch so far, is now also getting more attention on YouTube, Instagram and now TikTok. In this case, it’s about monetization and a subscription model in the beta phase, which will be introduced this week. But for a better understanding, let’s break it all down first and take a look at how you can earn money at the live streaming icon Twitch. By the way, we have already produced a more detailed video on the subject.
Among other things, you can earn money through affiliates or through a Twitch partnership, in which advertising is then placed on your channel. But you can also profit directly from your community, on the one hand through donations, i.e. voluntary one-time donations in the stream itself, or through a channel subscription, which is then billed monthly. This gives the subscriber advantages that can include being able to use certain emojis, being able to use chat at high-traffic streaming times, i.e. what is known from the television world as primetime, while non-subscribers cannot at that time, and much more.
Exactly this principle has now been applied to e.g. also taken up by YouTube with “Membership Gifting”. These are given away channel memberships. This means that subscribers can purchase a certain number of memberships, which are then given away by the algorithm to other viewers who are not yet members. YouTube itself says:
“With Memberships Gifting, your channel members can buy a set number of channel memberships [5, 10, 20] in a single purchase, that YouTube will gift out to other viewers in your live stream. Viewers who receive a gift membership, get 1 month of access to your channel membership perks like loyalty badges, custom emoji and more. Viewers who receive gift memberships do not pay any charges and as the creator, you receive your usual revenue share from each transaction.”
This means that person X pays for the number of memberships that person Y, Z, A etc. get, which supports the creator in several ways. However, the algorithm does not select arbitrarily, but takes into account the previous activities, how people have interacted with the Creator channel. The TikTok equivalent of this is live subscriptions. However, it is still unclear whether there will be certain gradations, i.e. different subscription levels, like on Twitch. The beta phase will start in two days on May 26, 2022 and is only available to a few Creators so far.
In return for monthly payments, subscribers receive exclusive chat options, emojis and badges, for example. So very similar to how it is with Twitch. According to first rumors, there should also be the possibility to influence the streaming camera.But are restrictive measures already known?
Indeed. The prerequisite is the age of 18 and a number of 1,000 subscribers.
The fact that TikTok has already established promotional measures for online retail as well is demonstrated by the cooperation between Shopify and TikTok, which makes it possible to easily link products in a video. However, the trend in all respects continues to move towards more community interaction, thus livestreaming.
