TYPO3 vs. WordPress

The right content management system for your business

In this episode it’s TYPO3 vs. WordPress. Which content management system is better for whom? Do you want to create a blog to accompany your online store or rather a complex themed portal? Which CMS is better suited for which project, you can find out here.

Two content management systems put under the microscope

In the last episode, we looked at the topic of content management systems, what they are, what they can do, and how they affect you as an online retailer. In this episode we want to dive a little more detailed into the matter and look at two CMS.WordPress and TYPO3, which system is better for whom?

TYPO3 vs. WordPress - Two of the most popular CMSs

First of all, it can be said that both systems, i.e. TYPO3 vs. WordPress, are among the most used content management systems worldwide. A Google Trends analysis from May 2021 showed that interest in WordPress is significantly higher. This is then also reflected in the market share of over 60 percent. Whereas TYPO3 has a share of just 2%. But what is the reason for the greater popularity? On the one hand, the multitude of extensions that WordPress has to offer. I had already mentioned in the previous video that there are so-called extensions that significantly expand the system.
Furthermore, WordPress is a relief especially for online retailers, whose core business is just trading and not necessarily programming. Blogs can be created piece by piece using page builders such as Elementor or Gutenberg simply by dragging and dropping. And if even that is too much effort, there are already pre-designed templates, where you then only have to insert images and text. But where does WordPress reach its limits?

Does WordPress have disadvantages too?

Well, it always depends on what you have in mind. You should be clear about this in advance. WordPress is clearly a blogging system that allows you to create, manage and organize your business blog easily, categorized and tagged. But in the blog structure can also be a weakness. If you want to build a content-rich theme portal with hundreds of subpages, TYPO3 is probably the clearer system. With WordPress, the existing pages are displayed in a list view, whereas the TYPO3 backend has a tree structure to offer. This means that TYPO3 would be your choice for content-rich theme portals with many subpages.

TYPO3 vs. WordPress - interim conclusion

That is, again, as an intermediate summary for TYPO3 vs. WordPress carried together. WordPress scores high on usability, plugin and template quantity and quality, and can shine with a modern, responsive web design through little effort. TYPO3 on the other hand shines with a clear structure if your site has many subpages. But also when it comes to multilingualism or multidomains, TYPO3 can convince. TYPO3 is designed to set up websites in multiple languages. Especially the administration is very comfortable and clear. This is also possible with WordPress, but you need an additional plugin.

TYPO3 vs. WordPress - stability and security

Which brings us to the topic of stability. The strong focus on the plugins on the part of WordPress can of course also be a vulnerability in reverse. If a plugin does not work, your site may not be displayed properly at first and you may have to troubleshoot. Since TYPO3 gets by with few plugins, this also speaks for a certain stability and reliability. This reliability can also be seen in the topic of security when it comes to the comparison of TYPO3 vs. WordPress. Data security and defense against hacker attacks are not only relevant for large companies. Every company has an obligation to protect its customers’ data and comply with data protection guidelines. TYPO3 traditionally stands for the highest security standards. This doesn’t mean that WordPress is less secure per se, just that we have the classic Microsoft Windows vs. Apple MacOs problem again. The market share is significantly higher for Windows, which is why it is naturally worthwhile for hackers to develop more malware for the more widely used operating system, which is why Windows computers are more vulnerable to this. Similarly, WordPress vs. TYPO3 – market share of 60% vs. 2%. What can follow from this, you can see for yourself

Native connections to classic ERP systems such as SAP are also easily possible with TYPO3. WordPress also uses plugins for this purpose. For this purpose there are e.g. an interface to the eCommerce ERP system and WAWI from JTL for the WordPress store system WooCommerce. So you see, a great popularity and a high market share are not everything. You just need the right tool for your specific task. Whether this is then WordPress or TYPO3, that must be considered individually. If you can’t do that, the CMS experts at eBakery as a WordPress agency will be very happy to help you.
